No. What I do with my own time is no one else’s business.

If you complete your hours then your spare time is yours.

However if your working as say a programer and making websites for clients in your 9 to 5 and in the evening using the same code for your own clients that’s unethical practice. Employer would have grounds for dismissal as your are classed as competition.

But if you a programmer 9 to 5 and in the evenings make and sell candles or something not related then all good

I definitely did. At first I had an attitude thinking what I do on my own time is no one else’s business. I was losing money everyday.
But I realized that it was foolish. It’s not about the idea you have, it’s about the execution. I actually told my boss and he connected with some of his contacts.
Basically I was operating a drop shipping business and it was his connects and know how that literally made my business succeed.

This is a great post to mention r/overemployed

    2 rules to follow:

    1. Always keep your mouth shut about your other job. Put your LinkedIn on hibernate mode if necessary.

    2. Budget your time as efficiently as possible. Plan out your day in advance.

Nope. No need. They get me during work hours. Anything outside of that is my personal time. Do you tell your employer what you do each night after work?

Yes, but I’m very close with my boss, and I’m currently on medical leave.. of sorts. I’m normally in the office, but I’m working limited hours right now from home. So his patience and kindness are important to me, and I repay his kindness with full transparency.

As long as it doesn’t affect your daytime work, it’s no one’s business what you do. But make it clear that you are not available while on company time.

I told that during a interview and they were not happy. They even said it three times that they are not happy that I have my own clients. I thought they would be impressed that I have my own clients that are doing well. But at my current job they don’t care at all.

    1. Do you depend on your 9 to 5 to pay the rent?
    2. Would you get fired if they found out?

If you answer yes to both, then you better tell them. If the answer is no to either, then do what you want.
