GuestMay 19, 2023 at 4:19 pmI did. Employers’ opinions of this are mixed, though. In the past, I’ve had a few places I’ve applied to say I’d have to give it up or asked me to sign a non-compete that would restrict who I can advertise to by industry, in very broad strokes (which I didn’t do).
Luckily, the place that hired me told me they see it as a positive because I’m learning how to be better at my craft outside of my 9-5, and they don’t even have to pay me to do it.

GuestMay 19, 2023 at 5:24 pmI told my current employer (an agency) when I got hired because it was on my resume when I applied, and also that I wanted to continue doing freelance work. We only work with B2B SaaS clients with a minimum budget, so they gave me the all-clear to keep working with any client independently as long as there is no conflict of interest. Works for me.
When I worked at my last job, fuck no. It was assumed most people freelanced, but no one openly talked about it with our employers, just between colleagues.

GuestMay 19, 2023 at 6:02 pmNo I got called out once by a previous employer. Better for them to not know as it truly is none of their business what I do outside business hours

GuestMay 19, 2023 at 6:53 pmNo. That’s a great way to get dirty looks and get blamed for your productivity (even if it has zero impact on your day job)

GuestMay 19, 2023 at 8:17 pmDepends on the company. The agency I work for has moved away from PPC so if we get a lead like that I am asked if I want to speak to them before we refer them elsewhere.

GuestMay 19, 2023 at 9:08 pmno? absolutely not. Do be safe don’t talk about anything outside of your job at your job. Not your love life, not your hobbies, especially not other work

GuestMay 19, 2023 at 9:35 pmYou don’t have to, but make sure you’re not in conflict with any Non-Compete clauses in your contract

GuestMay 19, 2023 at 10:27 pmBeen doing it a while and haven’t ever felt the need to tell anyone. As long as you performance are the 9-5 remains in tact there’s no reason they would even ask

GuestMay 19, 2023 at 11:43 pmIf it comes up organically? Yes. I don’t “hide it” from them, nor do I blatantly state that I do. If/when it comes up, I am honest with them and let them know that M-F from 9-5, I do not deal with my “side-pieces” (the reactions I get from calling them this are hysterical! ????) & I’m honest/upfront with my “side-pieces” about my availability, prior to sending/signing any agreements.

GuestMay 20, 2023 at 12:36 amYou have nothing to gain by telling your employer about any side gig you have. Some won’t mind, but others forbid side jobs, or it can even be used against you to justify not giving you a promotion, raise, etc.
