Aura Wants to Be the Social Network for People You Love, Not Just a Gift for Grandma

More than a decade ago, former Twitter engineer Eric Jensen bought a digital picture frame for his mom. The product, with its clunky features and poor display, was mostly a disappointment.

“It was terrible,” Jensen recalled, “but also amazing that she could see all these photos of my kids.”

That gift unlocked an unexpected solution to a problem that he and his business partner, former Twitter chief scientist Abdur Chowdhury, had been trying to solve for many months: how to create a smaller, more intimate social network that could also be profitable.

The product they built as a result, Aura, is now the category leader in digital picture frames, with more than 10 million users in 3.5
