Will Ads be shown if not enough people search my keywords?

Posted by seohelper on July 5, 2021 at 11:02 pm

Hi all, I’m really new with Google Ads and realize this is a simple question.

If I include a list of keywords for a campaign, will my ads solely only ever show up if a person searches my keywords? Or, if no one or not enough people, searches my keywords, will my ads still be shown to other people?

I know I can get deeper in terms of keyword targeting such as Broad, Phrase, or Exact, but I am just wondering more fundamentally and black/white, will my ads show to people who are not included in my keyword list?

    Thanks.

On a super basic level your ads are eligible to be shown when someone searches the keywords that you’ve uploaded to Google Ads.

Depending on the match type (broad, phrase, exact) Google will take certain freedoms with your keywords and show your ads to people that may not search your exact keywords. If you want to start by playing it safe stick moreso to exact and phrase but monitor your search terms on a regular basis to make sure that Google isn’t taking too many liberties with showing to search terms too far removed from your target. Use negative keywords to tease apart irrelevant search terms as you go.

Simply put, your search ads show when someone searches your keyword or a string that contains your keyword.

Yes someone has to search your keywords depending on the match type:
    Exact
    Phrase
    Broad

Then depending on your ad score and budget vs those of your competition will determine if your ads are shown.

So if there’s a limited pool of impressions, and your ad score/budget are low it’ll be hard to get shown.

If Google determines a keyword has low search volume then they won’t show your ads on that keyword, even if someone searches it.

Keywords are pretty broad now with all the match type changes. Especially with broad match keywords, people can search random unrelated queries and still get shown your ads.
