  • Why is reach only getting worse?

Posted by Outrageous-Brain3539 on January 14, 2023 at 9:48 am

It hasn’t always been like this for me. I do have a small audience (about 3.1k) but I used to get around 4-6k views for my reels and now I can’t get over 600-700 views.

Is it something I’m doing wrong or is it just Instagram’s algorithm?

Hi! You’re certainly not alone in your frustration. Views on the three major vertical video platforms will continue to be maddeningly inconsistent. On TikTok, it’s likely part of the formula. Every creator has a hit after the first few videos to keep them hooked on creating. Meta is still trying to find a formula for Reels that will allow it steal attention from TikTok. And YouTube Shorts will likely go through significant changes this year as well.

I’d offer two tips in this uncertain environment:

    1. Pay close attention to your insights and audience comments, and be responsive. If a subject, style, production technique, frequency or set of hashtags is generating more views, favs and comments, provide more content with similar features. TikTok, Meta and YouTube also typically offer that as their no. 1 tip as well. Know that views results from success in other metrics – namely, interactions and reach. On TikTok and YouTube, percent viewed/completed is the key metric to follow. Also, be sure to respond to the comments on your Reels!

    2. Take advantage of the opportunity to experiment and learn new things. Every creator is in the same position. Given that this is an emerging format, nobody has a secret sauce for consistent success. That means your competitors for attention are experiencing the same challenges. It give you the flexibility to conduct more tests and identify more content types that your audience will find engaging.

Hope that helps. Best of luck!

Hey. I’m a product marketer and content creator. There have definitely been some changes to how reels perform organically. AL (algorithm) changes all the time. AL used to serve reels way more. But two things I would keep trying out are collabs (invite another account and double reach) and turn up more often with engaging content. Sometimes the best results are from posting consistently with very entertaining and educational videos that people will share or comment on as opposed to just focusing on a high reach number. Best of luck!

#2 resonates with me as I am just starting to open up to Reels and Stories on Instagram since that seems to be the hot way to engage with the audience right now. Experimentation is key and doing something different every time is not going to hurt. I’m a bit intimidated by TikTok as a creator as it seems…complicated? However I know I will get there as I create more and gain more confidence in what I know first(Instagram). My first post to TikTok will most likely be horrendous, but hey gotta start somewhere. Same with my first reel for Instagram.

Yeah I got a hit on one of my Insta Reelz when I found out they had them so I made a stupid joking clip of something and I just at ther copying a sound playing over me, but 2 hrs later it was at 16.5K views and then I never got anything close to that again. So it’s a shitty feeling know you had something work then it’s just not happening anymore.

You have to post what is popular in your niche and what people are interested in and I know you have to post consistently.

It’s really a hit or miss with reach lately. There is no solid reason why this happens to some and doesn’t to others so you just gotta keep doing what you are doing and hope for the best. You can change few things up tho. Take a look at what other successful accounts are doing and learn from them.

Check if you are doing something wrong. There are few potential things you might be doing that’s causing this to happen. It could be that you are not engaging with your followers enough. If you are not regularly interacting with your followers, they may not be as interested in your content and, as a result, your reach may be declining.

You said you’re doing this to promote your products so you may wanna consider paid advertising. Try ads for small amounts of $ and see how they work for you. You can also try growth services like Ascend viral which can help you with both growing your followers and using them as traffic to your website or whatever you are using to see your products.

Also, if you are not posting regularly, your followers may forget about you, leading to a decrease in reach. Not using relevant hashtags or optimizing your content for searchability, your posts may not be reaching as many people as they could. All of these factors can contribute to a decrease in reach, so it is important to make sure you define what you are doing differently so you could fix it.

Honestly the Reel views haven’t been the same since late autumn because of saturation. They didn’t really get super popular until late summer. So anything posted before September or October had typically high view counts. Now it’s more difficult to get those same views generally speaking. Keep posting but try switching up your content to doing carrousels and other posts mixed in with high quality reels

There could be a variety of reasons why your reach on Instagram is decreasing. Here are a few possibilities:

Algorithm changes: Instagram’s algorithm is constantly evolving and can have a significant impact on how content is distributed and seen by users. This means that even if you’re not doing anything differently, your reach could still decrease as the algorithm prioritizes different types of content.

Increased competition: As more and more people join Instagram, the competition for visibility becomes more intense. This can make it harder for your content to be seen, even if your audience size stays the same.

Decrease in engagement: If the engagement on your posts (likes, comments, shares) is decreasing, it could signal to the algorithm that your content is less interesting to your audience, which can lead to a decrease in reach.

Decrease in content quality: If the quality of your content is lower than before, it could be causing your audience to lose interest, leading to lower engagement and reach.
It’s hard to say for sure what’s causing your reach to decrease without more information, but it’s likely a combination of these factors. It’s important to regularly evaluate your content and engagement, and make adjustments as needed to keep your audience interested and engaged.

Also, it’s important to note that Instagram’s algorithm is a black box and it’s hard to predict how it will change in the future.

Reach is usually all over the place and there are a ton of factors that can affect this.

It could be worth comparing your reach from this month to last month (or whenever your reach was the highest).

Were the people you reaching at your highest all followers or non-followers? Is your current content reaching your followers or are your reels being viewed by a majority of non-followers? If this is the case, you may have to consider reaching out more to your current followers.

Also, what does you retention look like on each reel? And how does it differ from your previous content.

Another thing to consider is if there has there been any changes in the quality of content? Amount of content being shared (has it increased or decreased).
