  • Whats Google Targeting in Match Core Update (Case Study + Discussion)

It is not news anymore that Google has destroyed the livelihoods of many bloggers and SEOs and is not stopping. Several websites have vanished from its index, with the rest following a similar pattern.

I want to bring you attention to two websites which operate in the same niche and industry but faced different fates.

    1- thecinemaholic.com

Good website, great UX, and informative blogs. The team regularly updates their blogs and adds new information where necessary. The website had more than 1M traffic last I checked in 2020.

Their traffic suffered a nose-dive. As per AHREF, they had 600K+ traffic in November 2023, which is now 150K, thanks to Google.

They must have used AI to generate content or used PBNS for backlinks. right?

Nope! Cinemaholic is an established brand with quality backlinks and good content.

    2- Whattowatch.com

They were also slightly hit by the September 2023 core update, but their traffic recovered, and it's going up. They have a similar backlink profile and operate in the same (Entertainment) industry.

The only difference here is that Whattowatch belongs to Future, a Media House; they have the power to sue Google.

Can this be why Google avoids websites belonging to Media House and penalizes others?
