  • What is the difference between Instagram and TikTok on the influencer and business side?

Posted by seohelper on April 7, 2021 at 3:20 am

I’m super familiar with Instagram and currently use it very actively, since I work in the creative industry, so everyone is always sharing their work, whether photography, music, or videos, on top of creating ads to grow their own following, and market other products.

The one I’m super foreign too is TikTok, a friend of mine is a professional comedian and used TikTok to grow his following into the upper 6-figures, which I don’t have perspective if that’s a lot on TikTok, but on Instagram, that’d be insane. He recommends growing on TikTok, but wondering is it better from a business and influencer standpoint, if someone’s goal was to build a personal brand, become an influencer, and sell their own products, like clothing, to stay on Instagram or try to give TikTok a chance.

From what I’ve heard TikTok seems like a place for kids to just post funny goofy videos, so no clue why someone would use it for business or more mature content, hopefully someone can share some light on using them as business platforms?

Yes, tik tok and instagram has a huge difference in their user demographic and content creation quality. As far as I have seen, if your an influencer who wants to sell there own products, I think you can try both. After you have run some marketing campaigns, then only can you tell which one is more suitable for you.

Just guessing won’t do. You have to jump in there and try it out. That way you would get better results. You do not need to make some huge investment for this. A small amount would be able to show you the results.

    Hope this helps!!

In the end you can not generalize. Some businesses can do really well on TikTok.

    Let’s take a paid/owned/earned look at it.

    Owned:
The algorithm is insane in a good and bad way. Your friend with 100K followers will still have videos that barely cratch a couple of thousand views organically. On the other hand his growth to 100K is great too.

    Earned:
I work for quite a big company and get videos of people using my brand that I don’t follow. Because the algorithm also knows what is said in the videos as well as what products are shown. This doesn‘t only affect products but what is being said as well. So if people are speaking well and much about your product it will by algorithm be shown to more people interested in your brand.

    Paid:
Really depends on what kind of campaign you set up but it‘s quite creative and effective. We can reach every single person opening the app on a day in our country (up to 5 times) as the first video can be ours (for the first couple of seconds).
Hashtag challenges are quite expensive but will get your name on millions of videos because people use the hashtag for Klout (protip: always use your Brandname in the hashtag).
Paid in Feed video ads have an insane ROI. I dunno how many people I’ve seen that have those silly octopus that shows your mood, a daylight lamp, or a space projector.

According to me, Instagram is definitely the winner here. It is like that student who cheated from other 5 toppers and topped the class!
Having a following on Instagram can help you source good brand deals and make loads of money as an influencer. As a business that’s selling products, people find businesses on Instagram more authentic.
Also, the targeted paid ads that you can run on Insta can provide you great ROI. People on Instagram are continuously interacting with brands, while TikTok users are using the platform for scrolling more through fun stuff.

TikTok has recently been banned from a few countries, which means there is no certainty of what will happen in the future. There are people making great content on TikTok too, but the number is very less.

You can create content for Reels and TikTok together if you wish to try out both platforms. While being on TikTok, you have to be more inclined towards following the trends. Just make sure that you don’t post videos on Reels having the TikTok watermark, as they can be removed by Instagram!
