Struggling to get traction on YouTube.

I’ve got our website dialed in and have been getting posts and pages to rank well. Traffic is consistent based on the market. YouTube on the other hand, just can’t get it going.

Is there a secret to SEO on YouTube? I know the two are totally different. Just can’t seem to get anything to really pop on YouTube.

Links are in my bio if you’re curious. Not trying to self promote. Just need some SEO help on YT desperately.

Website and YouTube SEO aren’t totally different, they’re actually quite similar. YouTube is easier on many topics because of the lack of technical SEO and the fact that you can get traffic via YouTube’s algorithm.

That said, you need to do YouTube-specific keyword and competitor research, and when possible you also want to rank in the Google SERP. Since your channel is about sports there are probably lots of opportunities and lots of competition, so if you want to get traffic from search, choosing the right keywords is important.

For “on-page” YT you want to use the main keyword in the video title, dialogue, filename, thumbnail title, description, and tags, and use secondary keywords where appropriate. Having a high CTR is critical. Your thumbnails look pretty good generally speaking but I have no idea what specifically works for sports content, so that could be wrong.

For “off-page” SEO sharing on multiple social platforms and getting traffic from external sources in the first day or so is a big factor. And of course things such as likes, comments, shares, and watch %. Backlinks and getting your video embedded on other websites is good but I’d focus on the other stuff first.

That’s not everything, but it’s a pretty good overview of the basics. Like I said it’s simpler/easier than website SEO in a lot of ways. Let me know if you have any questions.
