  • Understanding OG tags og:title, og:description, etc.,

    Posted by seohelper on August 24, 2021 at 12:19 pm

    Can someone please explain what the purpose of **og** is for? I’ve searched and it seems like it has something to do with social media – Facebook to be specific. I see **og:title**, **og:description**, when I view the source of my webpage. Is this for social media only?

    This is what I have on my site;

    <meta property=”og:description” content=”page content is here”/>

    My site does not have a “meta name=”description” do I need that even if I already have **og:description**?

    OG stands for open graph. Its a protocol where you can provide structured data regarding your page and website. Anyone reading / scrapping your page could looks for those fields to for example display a nice snippet on their part. For example : facebook, twitter, linkedin are some of the plateforms that use OG tags.

    It is not required to have those completed, however is you do, sharing your content (by you or by your visitors) should have more impact, since this one would be displayed more nicely and categorized in the right place.

    OG (Open Graph) meta texts are used for showing snippets on social media resources, like facebook, linkedin, twitter, whatsapp with a look that you want to show, eg: title, descriptive text, image and so on.

    Have you ever pasted a link somewhere and immediately a thumbnail snippet pops up which is clickable along with a title and description that is og: title, og: description, etc.,

    The Open Graph (OG) tags are mostly used by social media platforms. When you share a link on Facebook, WhatsApp, etc., you get a preview of that link (Title, Image and sometimes description). That’s where the OG tags are used.

    Search Engines do not use the OG tags and this is a good thing. You may want a more keyword-rich title and meta description (for Search Engines) and a “clickbaity” OG title and description for social networks.
