Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone who has been in a similar situation can give some advice.

I’m 20 years old and I’ll be getting my bachelors in 2~3 years depending on my schedule and stuff. I never used any form of social media before like twitter, instagram, facebook, and all that.

I heard from advisors that it’s looked downed upon in the job market where I live to not have 1, since it will look like I’m hiding something about myself. Especially since the majority of people my age tend to have at least 1.

So was wondering how do you guys get started on creating a personal 1 to at least make yourself seem reasonable for future employers.

I don’t have any friends as I didn’t talk to anyone back in high school, and at my community college no one really socialized since we’re all just focused on getting the credits to transfer.

So not exactly sure how to get started when making this account. I enjoy playing games, so would I just start following official game accounts and companies, or should I just maybe start looking to follow random people who live around my area?

I don’t think a gaming related twitter account will help you on the job market. Unfortunately you didn’t tell us in which field you’re graduating.

There are several situations were a social media account (or a link to an account you manage for someone or something) makes sense.

Journalism/news/politics: twitter account to show that you’re engaged in local and worldwide affairs.

    UserHelpDesk/Support: Twitter or personal website

programming/it: Github (not social media but it can be positive to link projects you’ve done)

photography/travel/marketing/sport/fitness: Instagram to show your portfolio and/or a sucessful marketing campagn.

a Personal facebook account can make sense if they want to look you up. But gaming or party related stuff just hurts your personal brand. A good tip is a profile with a short resume and a good professional picture. Everything else empty or restricted. Works both for facebook & linkedin but is not neccessary in my opinion if you don’t want to network there.

If you don’t have any – keep it that way. It isn’t looked down upon – I actually believe the opposite when I hear this. Social media is pretty worthless and a time suck so good on you. Multiple people that work for me actually running ads on them have never had personal social accounts. They had to create fake ones in order to run ads, but all they do is follow certain brands to see what they are posting and to look at their creatives for inspiration/ideas.

Don’t feel forced into using Social Media. Understand why some Social Media is free. It’s a trade off, your data in exchange for use of their platform.

LinkedIn is the best as far as the exchange benefits you a bit more than FB, IG, TW, and TT. It’s work, career, and education related Social Media. It’s been owned by Microsoft since ’16 or ’17. I mention this only to give you an idea of the type of data MS might get in exchange for using the ‘free’ version.

The premium version is worth it if you’re seeking opportunities, after you find a position go back to the free version to maintain your presence.

Best of the best to you ?

Set up a LinkedIn account and build relevant connections on it. It is all you need to showcase your professional achievements and experience. Your future employers will only be concerned about it (that too, not in all cases).

As you are interested in playing games, maybe you can use Instagram or FB, follow some accounts and see what kind of posts they are uploading and build your account on the same lines (Or maybe you can post personal pictures or follow people related to your profession). Do this only if you are actually interested in using social media and learning more about your hobby/profession!

Skip Twitter. There are really only two platforms you should use professionally (starting out that could help with job placement).
    1. LinkedIn (follow the advice everyone else has given. LinkedIn is a must especially for jobs.)
    2. Instagram — Please Hear Me Out! Don’t use it like a typical user, instead craft your account as an educational platform. Use it to build your reputation as an expert in whatever job market you are going into (even if you are not currently an expert). Create carousel posts. Get comfortable with making videos talking about subjects that inform others and post them as reels.
Share the same content from your Instagram to your LinkedIn. Both will act as your digital resume of knowledge and experience.
Don’t focus so much on attracting followers and likes, but rather in creating content that has actual intellectual value for anyone that comes across it.
For posts start off with things like what you think other people should know about your profession. What intrigues you? What has been really helpful for you? What other resources are helpful? After some good posts are out, (more than 10) you can reach out and tag other bigwigs in your field. Thank them for their info and inspiration and you might even get recognition in return, thus broadening your own reach.
Overall, the biggest thing that employers use when doing a “social media check” is 1) Are there any red flags? & 2) Is there consistency?

Hope that helps and I wish you the best.
