How does social media impact the lives of us all in this day in age? Is social media taking over and is this crisis much worse that meets the eye?

I’ve mostly quit social media. I still have the apps and accounts because there are reasons I cannot delete everything, but I no longer scroll, read, and comment. Life is more peaceful.

I think it’s important to remember that social media is only a stand-in for actual social interaction, and everything else exists to facilitate that. People only use twitter or whatever like they would listen to a group of friends around them talking, and catering to simulating that should be a priority. Everything else just becomes marketing.

As of now, me and many of my peers were trying to detox from social media when covid hit and suddenly it became the only way we could interact with other people. It became a lifeline. Discord and twitter replaced conversations and workplace chatter, and any hope of moving on from it was dashed because close those programs effectively shut us off from the entire world again.

I realized at that moment that a lot of social media exists just to facilitate communication between people, friends and so on, and *that* is what people were addicted to most of all. Can you even call interaction with other people an addiction, and not just a part of human nature? It made all the weird algorithmic bullshit into weird needless intrusions that adulterated this very basic need.

I don’t think interacting with others is bad, but when companies try to bend and twist that to fit their ends of marketing and social/political manipulation, that’s when it becomes unethical. Obviously it’s hard to find that sort of thing today, but I’ll remind everyone here that it never used to be like that and it worked out just fine. Social media was in the hands of people and the services that provided it knew that they’d leave if they encroached too much. Now, they’ve all consolidated themselves, so they know nobody CAN leave without effectively shutting themselves off… and now they can do whatever they want.

I think it’s unethical to hijack basic human needs for marketing bullshit.

I believe that social media has both positive and negative effects on our lives. On the one hand, social media can be a great tool for connecting with friends and family, discovering new ideas and interests, and informing us about current events. They also provide opportunities for networking, job searches, business and business promotion.

However, on the other hand, social media can be addictive, leading to overuse and distraction from real life communication. They can also contribute to feelings of anxiety, depression and low self-esteem, especially when comparing yourself to other people’s “bright pictures.” And the spread of fake news and misinformation on social media can lead to harmful beliefs and behaviors.

That’s why it’s important to use social media responsibly and consciously. Being aware of how much time we spend on social media and the impact it has on our mental health and relationships can help us maintain a healthy balance. And with the rise of decentralized social media platforms (Solcial media), we can also have more control over our data and content, providing a safer and more secure online experience.
