  • Social Media Managers – Ways to Supervise them

    Hi all!

So let’s say that you created a product, let’s say, some SaaS or something that requires a bit of technical knowledge to properly explain to people what it’s about.

As a founder, someone that knows everything there is to know about your product, you decide to hire someone (or more than 1) to do some social media posting for your product.

Let’s say that this person is good, when it comes to social media, but isn’t exactly a techie.

As a founder, you do your best to train your new social media manager, but…

Again, let’s say that this person starts posting on social media, and at one point, you notice that he/she isn’t using the “right” kind of words and this kind of drive your potential clients/users away.

Is there a tool that helps you supervise your social media manager/s?

You don’t need to supervise people.

You need to give them feedback to inform them what words to use.

Or switch to a scheduling app with an approval process.

As a founder, you need to be able to lead people. So educate them. And seeing as you hired them and they’re not “techie”, you should be creating a proper response matrix so they do know the right words to use.

PS, WTF kind of wrong could possibly be driving clients away? This is way over dramatic.

Aren’t the posts pre-approved by you before the publishing time?

You should give your feedback when the SMM sends you the content plan.

I highly recommend you use something like Hootsuite if you are crossing over many platforms (there are several options, I just like Hootsuite the best) where you can have your managers schedule items in the draft format, and you can go down a list and approve for posting. You can also view every scheduled post in list view, as well as analytics on your social media performance.

If you are simply using meta for social media promotion, you can utilize the business manager content planner in the same fashion.

    Hope this helps 🙂

    you hired the wrong person.

social media isn’t hard – think of it as ‘distribution channels’.

Focus on hiring someone who can create content with subject matter expertise… then hire an admin who understands how to post. That’s the best use of resources and you won’t need to drive yourself crazy micro-managing.

ps. we have a large background in b2b + software… DM me if you’d like to chat 😀

If your social media manager isn’t using the “right” kind of words and you’re worried it’s going to drive clients away it sounds like you haven’t standardized some things. Like the type of language and tone for your brand and your employee is trying to interpret without it so they’re essentially set them up to fail. There will be less to supervise if you make a social media marketing guide along with having them make content ahead of time for you to approve. I recommend creating content a month ahead of time so you have time to make changes and then use a scheduling tool like Hootsuite. I help companies create those if you’re interested in learning more you can send me a DM. ?

Use a scheduler that’s what most do. If you’re only posting on FB and IG the meta planner is free and can schedule up to 3 months. You can add people and give them access to certain things. You can delete posts you don’t want or ask them to change it.

I recommend BUFFER if other platforms are being used besides FB/IG.

I wouldn’t recommend hootsuite it’s ridiculously expensive for absolutely no reason – there’s so many other publishers that do the same thing for less money.

Provide your employee with feedback. And hopefully in a more direct and succinent way than your post here. Don’t beat around the bush, you’re not criticizing their work. You’re imparting knowledge and context that they don’t have yet.

And be open to feedback from them. You hired them to do a job, and in all hopes that they do said job better than you can. Maybe they have perspective you don’t.

Develop a brand book and guidelines. Trust your social media managers. Analyze the data. Look at the big picture.

Social media is a highly competitive zone. In case, your social media manager isn’t using the ‘right words on the social copy then the best and the fastest way to make progress is to give them the ‘right script’.

Almost every social media manager is a techie, however, they may not know how to upload the product on WordPress. And, they don’t need to know about it.

Also, take into consideration that social media is almost every time considered as a scam. So, perhaps the way you are looking at it needs to change as well.

It’s not social media managers fault if the company didn’t provide the guidelines of the brand.

It’s not social media managers fault that company didn’t communicate their expectations.

It’s not social media managers’ fault that they didn’t get proper introduction of the product.

Do not supervise people. If you supervise them, it means you don’t know how to communicate your expectations efficiently.

Supervising leads to “gotcha” moments. If you don’t like current social media manager – just skip the chase and fire them. Because once you start to supervise the workplace relationship will become sour.

If you are a startup with just a few employees do not start speaking in “fluffy” business manner. Not only it communicates that you see yourself on higher standing, but also dehumanizes workers.

Be human. Communicate. Don’t do “How much you value your work from 1 to 10?” or any other corporate lang. before addressing the problem.
