So google negative keywords don’t work 100%

Posted by seohelper on March 3, 2020 at 3:03 am

Just thought it was interesting that on the account overview page it shows you words that triggered the ad and though i have (resume) is broad match as a negative it failed to stop the search query (entry level mechanic resume) from triggering my ad and costing me $5.00. And that one of a few negatives that didn’t block a query. Its more interesting because next to the word that was in the query it shows a symbol that represents its a blocked keyword. I always figured it was near impossible for Googles algorithms to catch everything in literally under a second for real-time searches but they should at least refund you for these clicks.

You need to block the entire query in exact and/or phrase. Google negatives don’t work the way they do for regular.

I’ll phrase match for keywords and it blocks those irrelevant words pretty well.

Anything over one word should be done at a phrase or exact match

There is no reason why that should have happened. Call Google.

Like the rest mentioned, i normally use phrase match. Also for some reason using a negative keyword list cause some unrelated search queries to go throguh

Agree with the phrase comments. Also, I’ve found many instances where if you add the singular version of a word, the plural may still come through. So if it’s a popular word in either tense, it’s best to add both tenses as unique negatives.

Negatives are not a fail safe. In theory you should be able to run an account without them. They are more like a net that words get through. Tighten up your match types. Start with exact, expand to phrase, then modified broad, then broad if its converting real well. Also if you are worried about losing $5 I would reconsider google ads.

Unless you block the term as an exact match it’ll find a way of filtering through. We only add negatives as exact and find it works really well if you keep on top of it

Based on your description that search query should have been blocked. A whole word broad match negative keyword should block any search query that contains that exact whole word in it.

I can tell you this isn’t the first time Google has served to search terms they shouldn’t be. Contact support, it sounds like a bug.

Google Ads has been loaded with bugs ever since the new platform got released.

Just to play devil’s advocate, are you sure the search term came through after you added the negative? That is, on the date range you’re looking at, is it all AFTER the broad negative was added?

It’s to be expected, but common misspellings should be added too. Google is hyper-literal with the stopwords, which is probably for the best compared to who knows what fuzzy matching. Just make sure to do your own fuzzy matches.

are you sure it wasn’t a longer tail search query? negatives only work for the first few words in a search
