Sku for Google Shopping ads. Question

Posted by seohelper on April 7, 2021 at 6:37 pm

We create custom products and do that have UPC codes. We do however have skus, but these are primarily used for our warehouse to identify the product and do not use typical SKU format.

    2 questions.

Would you recommend we create UPC codes just to submit to Google even if we aren’t using them?
Would you recommend submitting our sku’s even if they have “,” and “/” in the sku?

I do not want to submit different sku’s than what we have on the site because they would not match and Google wouldn’t pull our review rating.

    Let me know your thoughts.

    Thanks!

The more you sell the more it’ll be cross indexed as being associated with a specific product.

I’d suggest setting up models, SKUs and UPCs with the goal of scaling out to more platforms and sales channels at some point in the future.

What you don’t want to do is put in work and limit yourself later.

You’ve probably already considered a major reason that they require a UPC is to group sellers together under one listing. Since you’re the only seller, I’d say skip the cost of getting them.

Based on the [product data specifications ](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/7052112?hl=en#zippy=), you should be okay using “,” and “/“ in your skus.

Custom products don’t need SKUs. You would only do this if other retailers were selling your product to. You should not submit your warehouse SKU number either, Google won’t know what that means. They only accept GTINs from retailer, or manufactures/distributors that they can tie back to specific products. That way they can know which brands are selling what products.

Reviews I believe are matched up by landing page as a backup because everyone was screwing it up so bad.

Upc’s that you purchase from gs1 will be the only one that has any effect and it will only be valuable if you have resellers that advertise.
