  • Should I remove these followers on Instagram?

I manage the social media for multiple hospitality groups in NYC, and two of the IG accounts I just started managing have **a ton of inactive / fake / ghost followers**, and the engagement is **tanked**. Both accounts have around 15K followers and get 5-10 likes per post and reach 200-400, sometimes a little bit more for Reels, but not much.

The business owners told me a marketing agency they hired a few years ago did indeed buy fake followers and use “follow 4 follow” apps and things like that – so I’ve been attempting to manually clean the accounts by removing all the obvious fake/spam/bot accounts and accounts that have been inactive for 5+ years. (Not even sure if it’ll help, but it’s worth a try?)

**But here’s where I’m confused…** I’m noticing the accounts have a lot of followers that seem like real people and who are still actively posting — but who follow 7,000 accounts or more!

I don’t know why any real person would follow 7,000 accounts? Is this the result of those users also using follow4follow apps/hashtags/etc? And if they’re following thousands of accounts I can’t imagine that they even see our posts in their feed.

A lot of these followers seem to be from the same few countries (often Thailand, Australia, and some South American countries), so it also doesn’t make sense why they’d want to would follow a (not well-known) restaurant in NYC.

Anyone have any input on what I should do? **Should I remove these accounts as followers too, even if they’re real people?** Like are they ever going to see our posts? Could they be bringing down the reach?

Instagram is such a dumpster fire these days smh
