I have a single website game, ranked in top 10 for very heavy searched keyword. Game is 12 years old.
My answer is, I would rather delete my game than start from zero now. It is over. Organic Bonanza will not happen anymore. There are 100k apps monthly published in google play, many of them are just webgames wrapped as an app. 30k new apps monthly for apple. Of course many of them have web version.
The search is crowded. When we started, we were one of 2-3 projects taking it seriously and we created a game for users who spend there years. And still it took us 10 years till we managed to be in top possitions in google. In fact, our trick was to win the battle in google play store with oir app first, which again was super hard. Only after that google recognized our web as linked to that app and pushed us to the top with 0 on page SEO, zero blogs, zero bought backlinks. We do have referal system and export of gameplay to youtube. But that is all.
Google knows you have a game. It does not care about blogs, if your website is primary for that. They measure time on site, retention and bazilion of other mettrics. And in the end, it is just about it whether users spent more time in your game than in other’s competitor games.
And even after you create the best possible game, others will rank higher because they created their game many years ago, have huge community and you have no chance to overgrown them organically.
And even if you create something unique, viral that will get tons of users, few weeks later there will be many clones, from studios with deeper pockets, who can cross promote their clones in hundreds of their games.
Right now in the google play there is 20k simmilar games for the same type of game we have. When we started there were less than 100.
I would rather requalify as a plumber than to start this type of business in this environment.
But, if you have a game, that can earn more money than it spends on ads, it would be completelly different story. But such games are very rare. Organic traffic is what makes most of profitable games profitable.
