A colleague of mine was accused of some pretty scandalous things and the media picked it up voraciously (Fox, ABC, MSN etc…). The allegations were eventually rolled back but there was no media coverage on that. So when people look up my colleague, I imagine people will be turned off by what they see. As such, I suggested that they hire someone who knows SEO and they may be able to push down those old articles.

Does SEO work this way? Can they do anything to push those bad articles down? Or do they have to create new content to push those up? My friend has had a few articles written about other things but they never seem to make it to his front page.

    Appreciate any advice

I have a friend in college that committed a non-violent felony and the first page results were filled with newspaper articles about it because they have high reputation and High trust with Google.

To help him out and to help his business, I created profiles for him on other high profile websites like LinkedIn and other websites, including a domain name with his name, a domain name with his name plus city with information about his business adding city name in there.

It took a few years but now those newspaper articles are at the bottom of the results in five years later there has been no change.

However, he also has not done anything to help himself by continuing to post information about himself on the web so whatever I did in about three months ended up helping especially when you search for his name and his job.

There are also a few people with his name so some of it gets jumbled up in the results even though it’s been about 11 years since the newspaper articles came out.

In short you have to do everything possible. My recommendation would be posting articles about how he was exonerated, or found innocent, or how the FBI, the police found there was no wrongdoing so that gets posted as well. Those big news sites will never follow up, so it’s up to the person, in my opinion.

Get better coverage, create public profiles, blogs, etc. Order digital press releases to blast new stuff out there to replace the old stuff.
