  • SEMrush shows massive traffic drop, but Search Console doesn’t

Posted by Techn1que on April 26, 2023 at 6:45 pm

Hey all, I was doing some routine inspection on my 4 year old domain the other day, and noticed that SEMrush shows a massive drop in organic traffic starting the middle of the month. Nearly all of our competitors are showing a similar drop in traffic as well.

But when I looked in Google Search Console, it’s showing impressions staying the same over the last few months.

Is the data in SEMrush wrong? Should I be concerned? Thanks!

SEMRush is not your source of truth. Your analytics should always be your reference for traffic. What SEMRush says shouldn’t concern you, it is a third party.

Do you have access to your web log files?
    Do some self-auditing for comparison

I’ve noticed a similar trend in SEMR lately. Basically, you’re ranking lower (fewer visits), but for more keywords (higher visibility).

    In SEMR –

    – Drops, or downward trending reported in “Organic Traffic” graph.
    – Large increases or upward trending in “Organic Keywords” graph.

Check your GSC and stretch it out over a longer period of time, like 9-12 months. Look to see if your “Clicks” and “Impressions” are experiencing a wider between the two… Impressions going up, clicks going down.

Semrash has incomplete or delayed data loading. Definitely GSC shows up-to-date information.

I’ve seen the same pattern for my clients, seems there was a incline around Feb then March and April are slightly lower but GSC and GA seem fine ???????? I’m sure it was around this time last year when there was a big increase shown on the graph for semrush keywords so maybe they’ve decided to put it back down who knows lol

SEMRush seems to be recrawling keywords and sites again from the core March update. Went from 32k keywords for one site down to 28k in the last several weeks. View the organic keywords tab, look at lost or declined keywords, you might find duplicate entries for lost and found. I’ve done manual searches and am finding placements for ones SEMRush is indicating we lost. They gotta get their shit together.
