If someone moves into a building that already has a tenant with a similar business name, will he struggle with SEO?

I have a client who shares the same last name with another business owner in the same area.
They’re both attorneys, but they practice different types of law. The names of their businesses both include their last names and are very similar.

My client is looking for a new office location and found a good deal in the same building as the other attorney.

Has anyone ever seen this situation before? This shouldn’t be a problem for Google, but I’m worried this might pose a problem for customers who are looking for my client’s website.

Should I tell him to move into a different office?

It can be yes. Same location different category is ok, but same location and similar name could confuse the anti spam parts of the algo. It’s a very specific issue but it’s possible to have brand dilution if the other listing has authority. I’ve seen one block in a large city where all the signals were all over the place because there was 5 attorneys with similar names and same practice areas.

Alternatively, could this be a good situation? They aren’t competitors because they practice different types of law. Could they just refer customers to each other? I just don’t want this to negatively impact rankings…

If it’s for Google Search, it’s not a problem as you mentioned that the other party does not do any SEO. So, turn this to your advantage and rank high ASAP.

If it’s for Google Maps and if the other party is already ranking good, then G shows a pin for their details only.
