  • Random emails asking me to give someone a back link?

Posted by BuckM11 on August 11, 2023 at 10:58 pm

Hi Folks, newbie here. I am a STEM teacher, and I have a public website where I post links to resources for my students.

At least 2-3 times a year, I get an email out of the blue, always with the same friendly, gracious, feel-good vibe.

It’s almost like they follow a formula, same length, and always ask me to post some link on my website. They usually claim they are asking on behalf of a kid in a summer kids camp (Girl Scouts, kids STEM camps, etc…)

Are these emails likely to be completely legitimate or are they telling cute stories to try and get a back link? I don’t really know anything about this stuff. Any comments or insights would be super appreciated.

    Here’s an example:

    Hi Mr. ____,

I hope your week is going well! I’m a volunteer from the _______ Girl Scouts located in ______. I just really wanted to get in touch on the behalf of my troop to thank you properly! We run a summer maker program once a week, so we’re always on the lookout for new DIY projects. That’s how we discovered your page, https://www._________.com/links and found it to be such an amazing reference! The girls absolutely loved perusing it for new ideas and information. Thank you so much for taking the time to put it all together it!!

One of our scouts, Emma, had the wonderful idea of passing along another helpful resource to you. It’s https://www.________ and it’s filled with information and resources on circuits. It really helped Eliza out with her potato battery, so she hoped it could do the same for others using your page!

Would you be open to adding Emma’s suggestion to your page if you find it as beneficial as we did? She can be shy and I was so proud of her speaking up about this resource, so I think if I could show her others are enjoying it too she would be thrilled and get a little confidence boost. Plus! I’m hoping it will help encourage her to keep up the amazing work.

Please let us know your thoughts if you have the time!

Thank you so much again and have a wonderful weekend,

    Lisa G.

I see no problem in reaching out to you. But that kid summer camp or whatever seems like a lie, to make you more inclined towards linking them.

They just want a backlinks, most are willing to pay something for it. Most would prefer to give you a full guest post than simply a link addition. I get like 15 of these a day. My main income now.

They are made up bullshit to get a free link from you

I wrote an article about addiction, which I got for page 1 and in started rolling the link requests

Some of them were really horrific stories that ended with can you add my link to your page.

If actually really pissed me off one email in particular, which I replied to pointing out how shameful it is

And your right the emails all follow the same formula which is why I know they are all bullshit

They are also super nice almost begging, I don’t even read them now I just delete them
