I’m looking to implement a popup on my e-commerce site on a small set of category pages.

Any best practices or things to avoid from an SEO perspective I should be taking into consideration? I don’t want this to impact googles ability to crawl the page.

    Thanks!

I use popup on my website and it does not affect the Crawl but it does affect the permanence of visitors over time

Google refers to them and interstellars and has warned against them for mobile.

Popups may affect user experience in a negative way…regardless of SEO.

It really depends on the demographic/industry/etc as to whether pop up’s are worth it to you. It’s been my experience that pop ups have little affect on ranking and our users convert pretty high on certain pop ups. But I get that results can vary widely.

That said, there are a few ways Google says a pop up can hurt SEO:

    – Unclickable (or not easily clicked)
    – Excessive Real Estate (takes up too much of the screen)
    – Deceptive Practices

As another user pointed out, be careful with pop ups on mobile. They tend to have these issues even when the pop up appears fine on desktop

“Interstitials” have been flagged by google for several years as a no-no in user experience. However, they’ve just updated a bunch of user experience stuff, contradicting what they’ve recently stated as best practices.

So, the non stop bullshit running from Google can be put aside and you can simply look at it from the user perspective.

Do you personally remain on a website that has a pop up?

    NO you don’t.
