    Outranking vs. Absolute Top of Page Rate

    Posted by Cellsforlife on January 17, 2023 at 5:10 pm

    Hi r/PPC \- looking at my **Google Ad Auction Insights**, I don’t understand how I can beat a competitor on Absolute Top of Page Rate, but then they ‘Outrank’ me.

    Am I misunderstanding? If my Ad is beating theirs to the top – how can they outrank me?

    TIA!

    We have an **Overlap Rate** of 42% (1 Jan 2023 to today).

    ||Impression Share|Position above Rate|Top of Page|Abs. Top of Page|Outranking|
    |:-|:-|:-|:-|:-|:-|
    |Company 1 (Me)|42%||93%|76%||
    |Competitor|19%|25%|91%|23%|38%|

    According to [https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2579754?ctx=tltp#outranking_share&zippy=%2Cauction-insights-report-for-search-campaigns%2Coverlap-rate%2Coutranking-share](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2579754?ctx=tltp#outranking_share&zippy=%2Cauction-insights-report-for-search-campaigns%2Coverlap-rate%2Coutranking-share)
    **Outranking share tells you how often your ad ranked higher in the auction than another advertiser’s ad, or if your ad showed when theirs didn’t.**

    **For example, if one of the other advertisers in your auction insights report is showing “20%” in the “Outranking share” column, this means that your ad won over the other advertiser’s ad. It can also mean that your ad showed when the other advertiser’s ad didn’t for 2 out of every 10 impressions that you were eligible to receive.**

    The key expression here is “that you were eligible to receive”. So (I’m going to round it up) you appear 4 times out of 10 when your ads compete, either by appearing or appearing on a superior position.

    This said, I understand where you’re coming from because the Outranking Share is easily understood for how many times we were outranked and not the other way around.
