So out of nowhere this industry scandal breaks up using my targeted keyword and it completely destroys rankings – now major news sites like telegraph, cnbc etc ranks for 4-5 top positions and we got knocked off completely from being at 24 down to >100. Wtf?

I think it’s bad news… We were ranking for a keyword and then a big news website published an article about that kw and they are still ranking. I guess quality of the article doesn’t matter much. They gained a ton of backlinks on the meantime so it’s a reinforcing cycle.

Don’t see how your rankings were destroyed. Being at 24th you might as well be at 100+. Not visible either way.

Unless that’s a new page, it was lacking something anyway to be ranking TOP 10. Can’t blame sites in TOP 10 when you’re not even in competition with them.

News sites ranking on the first page is usually a sign of no better pages available to replace them. Not always, but most of the time.

See, you are wrong if you think you can’t outrank these sites. We have done it with NDTV and others. Page Authority have more significance than Domain Authority. You have to make better strategy and most importantly content quality.

Your drop in rankings can be result of new SEO Updates.

You haven’t given any clue as to what that keyword is. Do people not realize that websites do not “own” positions and that news sites earn and aggregate tons of links and authority?
