I currently have no SEO plugin, I uninstalled mine about 2 months ago, and I seem to be doing only slightly better(which you would expect after writing and editing a ton). Leaving google to make my META tags has not always been the best option because when I read it, sometimes I’m a little confused why they picked that text in my article. Some of my articles also really have only one or two keywords to rank for, so I feel like those may get a better CTR if I manually did the META.

Please give your thoughts below. All are appreciated, and thanks in advance.

    Why not?

It sounds like you are talking about the meta description tag. There are other meta tags too.

Absolutely you should always always always use a custom meta description on every page you wish to rank for. At least your primary pages (IE home page, about page, services pages etc). The most important pages should all have unique meta descriptions. Some blogs should also have custom meta tags, but not all have to. Pages like contact, privacy policy etc – not as important for rankings – don’t need them.

Write them compelling and be sure to use your important search phrases at the beginning of the tag. But don’t just list them, write your meta description like it’s a 2 line summary of the page, with keywords inserted. CTA also can help (IE click here to find out more).

There’s still no guarantee that G will use the description, but without it you are at the mercy of Google’s own (terrible) snippet generation.
