Maximum Clicks or Maximum Conversion on new ad account with no data?

Posted by Crazy-Pop-6511 on April 23, 2024 at 5:03 pm

Running a new Google Ads account for my business targeting the local area.

    • Marketing objective is set to "Leads"
    • Google Search only
    • Conversion goal – phone calls from website and form submissions
    • Bidding – Maximise Conversions

Once I've got my CPA nailed down I want to throw 6-7k a week budget at it. However, I don't want to rinse thousands a week until it's optimised.

Given that this is a new ad account with no data, should I be bidding for Maximise Conversions as I am, or should I switch to Maximum clicks?

    (My Opinion)
Probably max clicks because there is no conversion data in the whole account. Iā€™d do this with a much lower budget to avoid you spend concerns.

Once you get the 30 monthly conversions that google recommends, you could then switch to TROAS or any other conversion-based bidding strategy.

If you are however near 30 conversions a month using max conversions, you may aswell keep it like that. šŸ‘šŸ»

I would start with max clicks to get data flowing.

Maximize conversion bidding strategy really needs 50 conversions in 30 days (ongoing) to find its footing. If your conversion volume is below that level, the automated bidding will struggle.

Get yourself on Manual CPC if you’re doing local lead gen and make sure your ads get served on the top of the SERP (check the Auction Insights). Keep match types on phrase or exact (monitor your Search Terms report, adjust match types based on what you see here). If you see a lot of irrelevant terms, favor exact over phrase.

I’d bid in the middle of the Top of Page – Abs. Top of Page range in the Keyword planner, that should put you on spot 3-4 on the SERP. Aggressive enough to get good leads, cheap enough to not pay an unnecessary premium.

Then switch to Maximize Conversions at 2-3 calls per week.

And scale slowly, especially if that $6k/week is triple or more than what you’d spend now.

There’s a big chance Max Conv. will either overspend or stall on this new account. Max clicks will just serve you cheaper clicks that are lower on the SERP. Not ideal for lead gen.
