Looking to hire in-house – How much should I ask for? I don’t want to burn my employee

Posted by Cool-Imagination4139 on May 31, 2023 at 4:58 pm

Hey Guys! I have a heavy tech background so I know what is like to work with someone that has no clue what you actually do. Which results in them asking you to do the impossible.

I have no clue of PPC, therefore this post 😀 We are a logistics company and we are looking to hire someone in a JR paid media role.

We currently have an agency. We actively run 2-3 google ads search campaigns.

I don’t want to set unrealistic expectations, but I also want to hire someone and have them work their full potential. ¿Is there a bull park of hr / day you could give me of how much time running 2-3 campaign takes?

If you have 2-3 campaigns and that’s all you need managed, you’re better off using a freelancer than hiring in-house. That’s not a ton of work, certainly not enough for full time employment. It would likely be the most affordable option as well.

Numbers of campaigns won’t tell you how much work there is always. There is reporting, communication, coming up with new campaigns. Also 3 campaigns could have to much going on in each one and need to be broken out into 6 or 8 campaigns. Plus maybe this person could help you expand into Microsoft, Meta/Facebook..ect.

Maybe it makes sense to hire someone part time (10 hours/week) if you don’t have much work for them to do. Either way, we have our [salary survey](https://www.reddit.com/r/PPC/comments/11xi72k/ppc_salary_survey_2023_final_report/) to figure out what pay might be for someone.

You don’t need someone full time for 2 or 3 campaigns. Start part time and take it from there.

Pay for performance. Simple as that. Base rate + percentage of spend based on scaled KPIs. You want your manager to have incentive to absolutely maximize performance, and without that incentive, they’ll just burn hours.

    Around 0.3 hours maximum.

You should scale your fee to your spend. Sub $3k/mo ? Any college kid will do, pay $500/mo for management. 3-10k/mo pay $1-2k/mo for management. Get somebody with at least 3 years experience and some positive results. Over $10k/mo? Hire a good agency and pay 15-20% commission.

When you have a low spend you won’t notice the difference between the algo basically doing it for you and a good manager. If you spend a lot, it’s important to find a good team.

    All the best!

I never understand why firms hire in house staff for something like Google Ads, especially small businesses.

You have no clue about PPC. How are you going to hold them accountable? Other than KPI’s etc, how are you going to know your new member of staff ACTUALLY knows what they’re doing or even, gives you correct information?

How can employing someone be REMOTELY more cost-effective than paying an agency? Sickness, holiday, taxes etc and employment law – a total nightmare. Most agencies will charge you a fixed fee and you can work them hard.

Working in house for a PPCer that knows what they’re doing is not going to be rewarding, in fact it’s likely to be totally boring and if the boss doesn’t get my job, it’s going to be frustrating as hell.

You can hire a freelancer because I do no think that you should Hire someone full time to run and manage 2-3 campaigns. Also, Ask if you need any help.

Hiring a jr as a first step can be tricky if you don’t know ppc. Maybe hire someone more experienced and a jr later under them.

Or outsource to a fully equipped agency[I need leads ](http://Https://ineedleads.co.uk) with agents to confirm leads coming in. You should be focused on warmed hotkeys or bookings.

    Where are you located?

Pay more than what “In N Out” pays

Just get your arms around what the core KPIs are and why, this will help you manage performance, but not micromanage the process.

Number of campaigns is often irrelevant as there are very complicated 2 campaign businesses and very simple 10 campaign businesses.

PPC is tied into analytics and the nurturing process, your in-house ppc pro should have experience in all 3.
