Keywords that should have MILLIONS of searches only have less than 100k monthly volume when I look them up on keyword research tools – How’s that possible?
Posted by seohelper on July 2, 2021 at 9:24 pmFor example, I searched ‘rings’ in Moz Keyword Research tool, and it showed ‘70.8k-118k Monthly Volume’ (United States – en-US). Obviously there’s no way that merely 120k people search for rings in the US, even if that’s a monthly average. When I hover over the numbers it says ‘Monthly volume ranges show the minimum and maximum expected volume for a keyword. Volume ranges have less spikiness month to month than showing a single number.’
I also tried ‘best laptops’ on Moz. ‘30.3k-70.8k Monthly Volume’
How’s that possible? Only 71K searches in the US? wtf
#**What am I missing here? I know that keyword tools use an estimate, but there’s no way those estimates can be THAT far off**

GuestJuly 2, 2021 at 9:48 pmWith the way Clickstream data is and various things these are estimates not exacts.
SEMRush tends to be 4 to 6x low for me.

GuestJuly 2, 2021 at 10:03 pmUnless you rank page 1 for “rings” and can back up the “millions” estimate with that data, I’d bet that the 120K estimate for the US on Desktop is accurate. People always assume search volume should be way higher than it really is.

GuestJuly 2, 2021 at 10:05 pmLooking at your example…if I wanted a ring, I would almost never search “rings”. I’d probably search ‘best rings’ or ‘rings for weddings’ or “silicone rings” or something like that. Yes rings are popular, but people searching for that basic of a term might not be as popular as you think.

GuestJuly 2, 2021 at 11:22 pmYour assuming estimation tools are accurate. They are almost never accurate. They’re basically emperical estimation tools and only a few platforms know the actual search volume.
It may also confuse paid and organic search. Maybe they mean paid search.
Look to Google keyword planner over a tool like moz. Any mistranslation or incorrect geography and the data is skewed.

GuestJuly 2, 2021 at 11:35 pmI don’t know why people are defending the data. I agree with you, “Rings” is searched far more than 120k times.

GuestJuly 2, 2021 at 11:50 pmThese tools only estimate traffic. Let’s go the opposite end of the spectrum. Keywords with 0-10 volume per month.
I write blog posts using those keywords and guess what.. I get thousands of hits. Yet the tool said 0-10.
Only use those tools as a guide.
There are so many factors that come into play.
I would also suggest that if you are new to seo then don’t bother targeting those competitive keywords as your articles will never rank on the first page of google. -

GuestJuly 3, 2021 at 12:04 amKeyword tools are not that accurate. They use to buy search data and that made them better but 2 years ago (I believe this month) they stopped selling the data all together for privacy reasons. So most tools you are looking at are still using that data from 2 years ago as I don’t ‘think’ anything else better has come along.

GuestJuly 3, 2021 at 3:42 amDid you search jewelry or jewelers or jewelry stores, or online jewelry stores or online jewelers etc. How about Kay Jewelers? How about Tiffanys? When someone wants a ring they look for people who sell rings right? There are a million angles at which people approach something like rings – imagine if someone wanted a car, maybe a new one, maybe used they are more likely to search for Ford or even craigslist than to hammer in the word “cars” into google. When its a thing, a product, there is a good chance people go the extra half step and search for who has the thing versus the thing itself.

GuestJuly 3, 2021 at 4:47 amI think you have searched using “rings” why are you searching for Short keywords there are a lot of keywords that bring traffic. First, understand user intent what people needs and they are lloking for.
take me as an example: I don’t search for rings. I search for
* Best rings for girlfriend
* Best rings for boy friend
* Best rings for ladies
* Best rings for Parents
* Best rings for Wedding
* Best rings below + costAlso, check for Long-tail keywords also.

Also for loptops not best laptops:
* Best laptops for students
* Best laptops for Gradautes
* Best laptops for Developers
* Best laptops for Gaming
* Best laptops for graphic designers
* Best laptops below $1000You need to check various types of keywords using longtail….

GuestJuly 3, 2021 at 5:56 amOkay, when was the last time you ever searched a term like “rings”? That’s be like looking up “wood” or “chair” or “necklaces”. The results are probably of so little use to you, that you haven’t done it outside of base curiosity. They don’t point you in an actionable direction. There’s no reason to look up a term like that. I guess the question then is: how many people are just curious about rings for no other intent than to see what happens? Probably around 70-100k.

GuestJuly 3, 2021 at 11:00 amPeople often search for longer more specific keywords.
People don’t search for “cars” or “tables”, they search for “classic cars for sale” or “best gaming tables” 🙂
