I am about to graduate with an Information Systems degree. It focused a lot on SQL, relational database design and Python (Numpy, Pandas).

I was originally going to go into more of a database focused role but after some reconsideration, I began to explore other options. I found SEO and it seems to have an analytical aspect to it that I think I would enjoy.

However, I feel intimidated by the job search. I imagine that I am competing against marketing majors, many of which probably already have experience in this type of stuff. Meanwhile, I am basically out here with no work experience or anything.

Any advice on how to become a more tailored competitive applicant?

Definitely you might already know, I would suggest you to start with some basic seo course for introduction there are a lots of available, and then deep dive into how search engines help users to find the peice of information, and all other technical seo things, and then definitely sem as well. After completing some basics an little dive, and you will become a candidate for seo intern.
May be I was able to any help to you.

Two things to keep in mind:

    1) there’s a technical side to SEO – referred to as “technical SEO” that marketers maybe have some knowledge of but likely do not have the skills to competently perform. And IT/IS person could be a major part of an SEO team in that regard.

    2) Marketing is a multi-faceted subject. Marketing is more than SEO. Just because someone is a marketer doesn’t necessarily mean that they took courses on SEO or are even good at it. Especially at the entry level, most marketing students don’t have any real experience with SEO outside of a classroom setting or possibly internship. Even still, those experiences wouldn’t focus on the technical side of things.

Someone who knows both sides of SEO, or is at the very least knowledgeable about how the two sides impact one another, is a real asset. It’s uncommon to find someone who can do both.
