  • Is it a good idea to use a domain extension to spell my company name?

Posted by seohelper on July 2, 2021 at 4:21 pm

I’m in the process of developing a startup, and realized that I can use a .net domain to spell out my actual company name. For example, if my company name was ‘Boston Clarinet’, I could get the domain ‘[bostonclari.net](https://bostonclari.net)’.

Now on one had I think that it sounds like a cleaver idea, but on the other, I’m wondering if it could lead to confusion, and maybe something like ‘[bostonclarinet.com](https://bostonclarinet.com)’ would actually rank higher? Any opinions?

It depends as both are general domain so you can’t say if using .net or .com domain will rank you higher or not. At start .net domain was used by networking companies and internet service providers but now peope are using it if .com domain is not available.

It is a good idea to use .net according to your example as it helps user to remember the brand name as well as website easily

If you plan to rank higher (or hopefully first) for the search ‘Boston clarinet’, since the keyword combination is in the domain name, it might have stronger signalling for Google just for that search. I don’t think is that powerful, but I guess is slightly better to go for bostonclarinet dot com instead of bostonclari dot net

Get both if you can. I have a few projects where I use the normal .com/net/org for everyday purposes and also the special tld for landing pages and stuff.
