In Search Ads, is the meta still 1 Responsive Search AD + 2 Expanded Text Ads?

Posted by seohelper on May 7, 2021 at 8:58 pm

I think the “recommended” from Google seems to have changed since I last paid attention. Thanks for any 2-cents you can provide. I’m assuming they’ve dialed in or rolled out their RSA’s more now

A bit of a lazily asked question for Friday at 5pm in my time zone here – what I mean by “meta” is “best practice”

I’ve noticed that 1 responsive and 2 expanded are still the default, but Google is continually pushing responsive more and more. When you go to create new ads, you have to now click “switch back to expanded text ads.”

Personally I’m not a fan of them. Sure, your CTR might be higher, but what exactly are you showing the user when they appear? I have no idea. I like to show clients EXACTLY what copy I’m using and in what order.

I prefer to run expanded until I find the winners then throw in a responsive to see what comes out on top next. I would say the mileage will vary by industry so while Google loves to push it as a silver bullet it’s definitely not.

    What works best for you?

I don’t care what’s best for Google, because Google isn’t my client. 🙂

Whatever works best for the specific situation is what I am going to do for my clients. That could be X here, Y there, and Z somewhere else.
