I have a really ethnic name. A few months ago, I started outreach on business ideas I’m trying and got low response rates.

Last week, on a hunch, I did a test. I contacted a bunch of people using my real name, and a bunch using a neutral, western name. The response rate to the western name was 7x higher. Same message, same offer, same email list.

I’m a pragmatic person. Although I was born and raised in the US and speak well, I don’t begrudge biases or whatever. so I’m going to change the name I operate under to the western name I used.

The question: should I change the name on my current LinkedIn profile or start a new one from scratch? If it helps, my current connections are unrelated to what I’m trying to do now.

If there is a way to look up someone’s previous name on LinkedIn, I guarantee 99.9% of people won’t do it. What’s your concern?

First of all, that sucks. I’m sorry you have to do this. But, I say go ahead and change your name on your current profile if you want. As long as you keep the same profile picture, your followers will know it’s you. And you’ll get to keep all those connections that help you look more established to the people you are messaging.

are you only using Linkedin to reach out to people? if not, then i would say you should just keep it as it – but have everything else (email, website, business cards, etc.) go by your new name. i just hate the thought of you having to erase yourself, even though i completely understand where you’re coming from!!

I think it’s best you start a new one
