Almost 10 years ago i started posting pictures of me on facebook and instagram.

They went viral and i became kinda famous in Europe. But i was stupid enough not to capitalize on that. Back then, instagram was new, there was no real broad influencer business going on.

2 years in, i had enough of people wanting to take pictures with me, woman wanting to date me, everyone trying to be “friends” with me. So i quit, ice cold and deleted my social media.

And now after all these years i tried to go back on social media, not for the fame, but for the money. Starting a clothing brand or something similar. But it doesnt matter what i do, i cant get traffic and “likes” anymore. After a few days on instagram i dont even have ONE FOLLOWER!

WHAT IS GOING ON HERE??? WHAT HAPPENED???

I did not become ugly, i am still in great shape and i am a graphic designer, so the content i post cant be that bad. Maybe some could be so kind and explain to me how i can get traffic again?
    Thank you in advance.

The internet is vastly different from 10 years ago…there are way more people online, the barrier for entry is considerably lower. Creativity isn’t as important, and access to professional gear and apps (like premiere, photoshop) is no longer important.

Anyone with a smart phone can make well edited videos and graphical content, and people don’t care for quality in the same way as you’d expect…not to mention, algorithms are completely different in how they recommend stuff.

The only way to get traffic is to carve out your niche, create content consistently, engage other accounts, and build a small but loyal audience. The days of getting 1 million views and becoming “someone” are over.

You came in right at the perfect time. Organic reach was off the charts because social media was new, and companies were just trying to get people on the platform by blowing them up basically for free.

Today, it’s much more difficult to grow organically unless you’re willing to dedicate a decade to building a slow, loyal following or have lots of money to throw at advertising.

If I were you, I’d reach out to anyone you knew back that also blew up and might remember you. Collabing with big figures is a way to grow fast in today’s day and age.

Another option is getting on TikTok/Reels and seeing if anyone remembers you.

    Good luck.

10 years ago influencers mattered. They don’t now, instead content creators are more relevant than influencers.

10 years is an enormous amount of time when it comes to social media, tech, and trends.

10 years ago you could post literally anything and people would like it. It’s not like that at all anymore. People don’t just give likes away or follows. The bar is higher and people want value not just good looks.

The only thing you can do is start over and accept that this is a slow and steady climb. Spend time on youtube and this sub researching best practices.
