  • I think I’m being underpaid in my social media job

Posted by bby2brat on December 2, 2023 at 2:43 am

I just started doing social media management for a small business. I’ve never done social media management for anyone but myself so I didn’t expect a huge rate. We agreed on 5 posts a week for $450/mo. But now I’m spending hours a day working on this side job and I think I’m being underpaid. What is a fair rate for this position and should I bring it up?

Edit: it clarify I make canva posts and reels for the account. She gives me the info and I apply it to these posts.

Are you creating content? Moderating comments? Analyzing engagement? If you are being given premade posts and just pressing post that’s one thing but if content creation and moderating is eating up your time it’s more than 5 posts and you could ask for more for sure.

The question I have is what do these social media posts involve. I do social media for a small non-profit and can pull together 3-5 posts per week in about 2 hours per week. Most are fairly simple with a couple posts per month that take more time.

You may be able to make this work by simplifying the social media posts. If you can’t, then I would suggest approaching the company and asking for more money or reducing the number of posts you can do for them.

Hi, you are absolutely being underpaid. In my experience once people get used to paying you a certain amount they think that’s what it is worth. So getting more than $450 from her might not be possible because she is always going to compare it to what she used to pay. Going forward with other projects set up a weekly price, quantify how much each post is worth, the value it brings and your time. If you are just starting out don’t get down on yourself. Set up an online portfolio and get some more clients. Good luck 🖤

I agree! You need to take time to evaluate ratio of work done/money made per hr. Also factoring in the percentage of how much the said business is making off of the new posts. Are they making significantly more? Are the posts working? Is it beneficial to everyone?

I’m currently getting 100 a month, it’s my first social media job, I rebranded their full socials, run the Facebook and Instagram, create the stories and upload them everyday at set times, film, edit and upload reels throughout the week, make general posts throughout the week and reply to messages, Wasn’t planning on being a social media manager but ended up in the position but getting tonnes of experience, next job will be priced a hell of a lot higher as I know how much time goes into it

Well I should check competitors and see how much they are charging first. If you see it’s similar its a problem of what you should be doing what you should.

Another option is for example you get a freelancer from a third world country where the wages are way smaller and they still know really good english and know how to do the job. For example you could outsource the tasks that takes longer for you and pay like 150$ to a freelancer to do them so you will just need to do the review of the tasks and then send it to the small business or post yourself.

We pay $20/hour part time. Monday-Thursday, 8hrs/day. One day work from home. So… one week of PART TIME is around $640. Most shops pay much less (according to Indeed listings averaging social media work to $14/hr).

I think you just need to make a very strict, compact schedule for yourself to make all of the posts in one go and then set and forget. The rate is pretty good if you are allowed to work from home and make your own schedule.

Move to a 3rd world country and it’ll be more than enough. You can work remotely too.
