    Hey guys,

I recently wrote this up for work but figured it might interest some people here. HubSpot recently advertised their Social Media Trends for 2020 report, so I read it and pulled the important info from each trend so you can get what you need without lending too much of your time. Happy to answer any questions too.

**1. The rise of unique and niche networks**

    – People are no longer looking for large communities, but the relevant ones. Less noise, more genuine engagement. People are choosing where they want to be social online.

**2. Social media wellness is essential**

    – The awareness of the impact of social media on our mental health is increasing, with platforms changing their approach, to make their communities friendlier and less toxic. Stay aware of your consumers’ social media wellbeing and engage with them with ways to escape, sparking their interest in real world opportunities.

**3. Data privacy and fake news**

    – Your brand could be destroyed if you’re linked to anything that puts customers data at risk. In 2020, the big trend will be brands and platforms working hard to counteract the distrust perceived in social media. Also, expect a savvier level of customer – you’ll have to balance a fine line between data privacy and personalisation.

**4. AR and VR (Augmented reality and virtual reality)**

    – Due to the rise of 5G in 2020, VR and AR are tipped to be the next big thing. Start thinking what VR and AR can do to maximise your user experience, and the environment they will be most effective in.

**5. Gen Z will only engage if you Pivot your strategy**

    – 84% of millennials say they don’t trust traditional advertising, a growing concern as they own significant spending power. Learn which channels they’re using, when, how and why. Be part of that conversation.

**6. Influencer marketing will go small to go big**

    – In 2020 it’s predicted that micro and nano influencers (500 to 10,000 followers), will make up most of brand influencer marketing. These influencers have built smaller, more enthusiastic audiences which drive more authentic engagement and help brands avoid fake influencers.

**7. You will invest in user-generated content**

    – The cult of celebrity influencer faded as user-generated content took over. It generates 6.9x more engagement than branded content. It’s authentic, cultivated, and created outside of the brand sphere. This content builds a community within their customer base, which is powerful to millennials who no longer just buy the product, but the experience it provides. Now is the time to start building that community. Though it can’t be built in a day, the sooner you get started, the better.

    Thanks for summarising this 🙂

Does anyone else feel like these have been “trending” for 3 or 4 years now?

I could probably find reports from 2019 and 2018 that say the same thing more or less. At a certain point these are less trends and more part of marketing 101.

Discord is a great place to create a small community. But, you definitely be genuine with your marketing efforts.

Livestreaming and synchronous media is also huge. Over the last 3 years there have been quite a few projects focused on building live, real-time interactions. Clubhouse, Bigo, HouseParty, to just name a few of the bigger ones.

Social discovery is getting bigger as well – social networks are no longer about connecting with existing friends, but rather finding new ones. And that’s beyond dating and nsfw stuff that plagues every platform already.
