  • I don’t want to work in social media anymore…

Posted by seohelper on February 25, 2020 at 6:51 am

Anyone else just…. burnt out? Tired of the vitriol on social media? Tired of the mundane? Tired of the constant fight with the platforms and having to explain to clients it’s not your fault when Facebook goes down or it takes 2 days for an Instagram ad to be approved?

Problem is, my entire career has been in social media marketing. What else can I do? Where else will be skills translate to a more… meaningful?… career?

In a similar position to yourself, I’ve focused on my transferable skills and am currently apply for lower level project management roles and PM support roles.

You have a lot of skills that will carry over to other roles, especially if you have an agency background.

I am as burned out having to compete on it as you probably are in working on it.

This is pure tongue-in-cheek sarcasm, but you could always do what all of the other failed/burnt out “social media experts” do: make money by teaching other people to do what you do now.

You know, write a book, make a shitty Udemy course, etc.

I’m over it too. Social media feels like a black hole. Everything changes constantly and I feel like it’s all pointless.

I’ve been feeling like this for a while now. The exhausting part is explaining the clients that not every post or page will get insane amount of likes or even if it does it means shit all because it’s just a vanity metric.

    Post likes =| Sale

Create an agency, hire people to do the boring stuff so you can focus on strategy.

Every job would be tiring if you do it for at least one year, sorry millennial thought!

There are plenty of things you can do, I promiss that if you go freelance, where you can pick your projects and also create your own job, it will al be worth it, just some ideas:

    – Create your own company, leave the boring, vanity stuff to others and focus in Social Media Manager

    – Create courses, teach what you know, automatise this and be happy

-Take a break so you can have some perspective

    – Don´t be afraid to change, i´m sure you can find something else, where you can feel more fulfilled.

    Hope this helps you!

I feel like people don’t want to use social media anymore but they don’t know how to stop. I’ve always compared these platforms to drugs. I even had a very real withdrawal when I stopped using facebook products to communicate with all my friends.

That was 4 years ago, I hate to think how hooked people are now.

Edit for the downvoters: I understand you’re talking about not wanting to work in social media anymore but my point is that I feel people don’t want anything to do with it anymore. Everyone’s starting to realise its a cancer on society.

The advertisement industry generally isn’t something I respect much nor admire. Speaking as an ex marketer

I think a lot of that effort could’ve gone into understanding and building a product/service people actually want instead of trying to sell people things they aren’t looking for or want

If the what you make doesn’t sell itself to some degree you don’t have a product/market fit

I’m not full time in SMM, it’s one service I freelance in.

I use many of the same skills in copywriting and nonprofit fundraising. If you like the marketing-strategy aspect but dislike the pace/environment of SM, other forms of marketing can put your skills to work.

Maybe try doing social for government? You don’t really have to sell anything and most of the content you’re putting out is to inform the public about what you’re agency is doing or what programs your agency offers. I mean, there is obviously backlash on social with trolls and people who may not agree with what you’re doing but it’s not AS BAD as consumer.

I made the change about 1.5 years ago and I’m really happy with it. Also, take some time off; REST!

I have a technology background and can’t stand social media. The changing landscape, the race to the bottom for content, the strangling off of other content sources for each social media platform to become the singular source. At this point reddit and wtsocial are the only ones I can participate in without gagging.

A guy I know moved from social media to writing content for a bank’s website. The website(s) they have are huge and he knows seo and basic engagement skills. It’s 9-5, pays the bills, very low bs.
