I got out of social media … it felt like a constant uphill battle and there was little executive support as time went on. I transitioned to analytics and am really enjoying it! I can definitely see other avenues with skills you naturally acquire through social media, like analytics reporting (google analytics, tag manager) or graphic design or copy editing … or getting into another marketing channel like email marketing, SEO, web development, etc.

I got wrapped up in reporting on social media, and that bled into reporting on the rest of the marketing team and then it led to a new role as a digital marketing analyst, and it’s grown from there. I’d say the biggest thing has been being open to change and willing to learn new skills.

I know a guy who works now as a scavenger. No joke. He’s done with offices and media and enjoys the camaraderie and the positive exhaustion after a day of work a lot more. They even pay good.

I think we’ll hear stories like that more often soon. People have enough of their phones, the constant manipulation, the pressure from those silicon valley companies… customers as well as pros.

For me, I’m burnt out of being undermined by senior staff and not getting any budget to actually acheive results I am looking for. It’s really frustrating to see that memebers of my team see social media as the means to getting those results without thoroughly considering the objectives and implementation.

In an effort to start curving this trend, when they come to me for marekting help, I know start asking for what’s the objective beforehand and tell them well these are your option.

The skills you pick up in social media, especially RE: paid ads, can help you shift into a Paid Search Analyst role earning more money, dealing with more numbers, and dealing with virtually zero people.

I worked with social media for 10 years. I started on 2009 when SMM wasn’t even a thing professionally made at least in Brazil. Last year I had a huge burnout from working in advertising agencies. Mostly was because of the work environment but I’ve been feeling for a while that I didn’t want to work with social media anymore.

I now feel it’s pointless and boring, it’s very difficult at least on ad agencies that prioritize offline ads. And also I do not understand how 10+ years of this existing didn’t teach anything to advertisers on how to work properly the digital environment.

All the agencies I worked on were very old fashioned and my team(s) were always considered “the B team”, we were constantly overwhelmed with a great amount of work since management considered it was all “quick and easy” when we know it takes a lot of effort and knowledge to properly work with social media (since we work at multiple functions as planning, content production, writing, management of the channels, ads, sometimes monitoring and reports). It’s a lot of stuff and I often felt that the other teams and specially the agencies management belittled our work by not giving us the right resources: more people, involvement on the jobs in an early stage, salaries (!!!), proper work hours.

Sometimes I had to work on weekends and nights and very often received texts and calls on my free time “because it had to be done NOW”. I don’t agree with the immediacy that of working with online content demands and there’s this pressure by our managers and clients. I also got tired of answering questions that my clients should already know to be considered in their positions. I couldn’t understand how a digital marketing manager could not know how facebook’s ad system works since this should be a basic requirement for them to get into this job.

So I quit working with it. Now I work as a freelancer, I do some jobs on social media actually but not only that. After a while not being “the social media manager” in some agency, I saw that I’m good in other stuff too. It’s difficult to start again but I’m sure you have other interests and you will be able to find what you like working the most.

You probably learned something about branding and reputation. Use that to turn to general marketing.

    You can chang it up
Start something new from scratch on the side and build it up til you are able to stop what you were previously doing.
    Try something outta your niche

Usually from this situation you feel you have seen it all. Done it all. But its usually just time to move on to something new or it’s time to expand your horizon.

In this case change is good if you go about it smartly.

Been reading a lot lately about people who reached the burn-out phase and just went and did something else. Learning a craft seems popular.

Social media should be only top of the funnel , get clients their phone numbers and emails .
All big influencers Gary V , Jake Paul Logan Paul are constantly asking for their followers phone numbers on their videos , so yeah social media is great, but owning your audience is the holy grail .
And you can use social media to get an audience , but you can also use google / bing , affiliates or native ads

How should other people know? Do you have skills that will transfer to other jobs? What degree do you have? How long is your work history?

Change course to more general digital marketing. Will likely involve some social but it’s generally not a huge focus

Biggest thing I’m over is everybody thinking they know how to do it because they have Instagram accounts. I’m burned out on that for sure.
