  • How to start micro-influencing successfully?

Hi all! I am new to this sub so bare with me.

I would like to work as a micro-influencer on Instagram! I work a typical 9-5 job currently and would like to keep that going so this would be more of a side-gig/hobby. I just wanted to ask a couple questions…

I would like to grow organically but I am not opposed to spending money in order to garner attention. I am just wondering if boosting a post is worth it? What is the best way to grow my following so that I can start getting some attention from other micro-influencers and companies? Hashtags? I have been following accounts that I love like mad the last couple of days, as well as companies that typically endorse micro-influencers.

Secondly, I am wondering if it would be best to start tagging products I am using on my feed? For example, I know that FrankBody will often send micro-influencers PR packages with their latest products. I own a ton from FrankBody, including the latest products. Should I just start posting about these products or is that an overstep?

Thanks a ton for the advice! I know this market may seem saturated but I am looking forward to starting this little hobby of mine.

My advice, don’t rep any product until you’re being paid to. People don’t really want that kind of content in their feed, unless you’re providing value (like tutorials, unboxing, tips for using a super popular product in a different way, etc).

Focus on unique, shareable content rather than trying to catch the eye of a brands by giving them something for free- after all, why would they pay for it if it’s free already?

My advice is to research What makes content shareable. It’s nuanced for every niche, but what works for me is content that people identify with and want to share because sharing or reposting says something about them

Hey man, social media strategist/marketer here. I’ve worked with influencers in the Youtube/Instagram space, people like Vincent Chan, Daniel Iles, Erika Kullberg and a few others. Before working together they were all under 100K, and now they are all close to a million in less than 18 months. The point I am trying to drive is that it is possible to make a living out of this, but you gotta have a solid strategy, develop messages tailored to 3-4 target audiences and be consistent with the quality and the content production. Right now short video content is killing it on Insta and #shorts, if you’re consistent you can really increase you can build a solid foundation. Right now the market is flooded, you gotta do amazing out of the box content. Or at consistent above average content. Develop some content pillars and hashtag libraries for each on the insta side, try to combine some hashtags for discovery, traction and reach. If you need more pointers or any clarifications feel free to shoot me a DM 🙂

To begin with, I want to warn you that it is extremely difficult to move forward on Instagram now because of the frequent change of algorithms. However, it is still possible and the organic way is the best one you can choose.

As for the boost of posts, I would recommend using them for accounts that already have 10k+ active followers. For very novice influencers, I would advise investing in high-quality Instagram tools. For example, try the online activity tracker Snoopreport. With it, you will be able to receive reports about likes, follows, hashtags, and interests of the users you track (whether they are your current or potential followers, as well as competitors’ followers). This will help you create an engaging strategy and select niche hashtags. I also recommend using the Planoly scheduler. Publishing at the same time has a positive effect on promotion due to internal Instagram algorithms and will help you gather a large reach.

Tagging products will also help you attract your target audience. However, most likely large brands will not pay attention to the micro-influencer. In this case, I would rather recommend focusing on communication with consumers of these brands and profiles similar to yours, due to the intersection of content.

    Good luck!

Commenting from the agency + brand side here:
    1. We pay influencers who have proven track record of driving results

    2. In my opinion, for the brands you’re already tagging, I’d reach out to see if they have an affiliate program… thus you continue to get product, get a little something extra (samples) and in exchange, the brand has an ambassador and a direct link for rev. Tracking

Those that set out to be an influencer almost always fail. It’s like saying “I want to be famous.” Like making it in Hollywood, the ones that see success start out with a genuine passion and the success comes much later.

My advice is yes!! Start tagging brands! Get noticed, I’ve been noticed by multiple ones which ultimately led to me being sponsored!
