Hi, I want to do social media management for small-scale e-commerce companies but I don’t know how to get clients. I have really been struggling lately and I hope you guys can tell me something useful. I’d like to know where and how you got your clients because it would really help me analyze my situation and act accordingly. Thanks!

Yes definitely go for an online portfolio (the more project the better) and use your Social Media platform (this is your field after all). Most probably FB (groups) and IG to display your knowledge and LinkedIn to reach your customers. Good luck;)

Reach out to companies you think need help and tell them how you can help and show them what you’ve done for others. Run ads targeted at these sorts of companies to with great visuals and include things you know most them want done or are missing.

Build a portfolio, explore listings on Craigslist, connect with local businesses.

If you have any friends who are trying to become vloggers, influencers, or musicians, offer to help them with best practices in return for them adding you as an editor on their page. Analytics will be your biggest asset.

Put together a portfolio and ideally a case study or two. That’s pretty much the be-all and end-all. You need the data to back you up. A qualification or two under your belt doesn’t go amiss either.

Sorry, but personal accounts are meaningless; I recently had a recruitment drive and had nearly 90 applicants for one post, and probably a third of them thought they were equipped to manage multiple and diverse clients just because they had a lot of followers on their personal Insta page. That’s a hard No from me. It’s like saying you can run a busy premium restaurant because you can cook a pizza for your girlfriend.

A lot of our clients come from word-of-mouth referrals, and we are now very selective about who we take on. A good client who is well-connected will be likely to recommend you if you do an outstanding job. Encourage that, if it’s appropriate.

You should also ensure your own business feeds are up to scratch and getting good engagement, because that can be one of the first things a client will check. If it’s up to standard, consider advertising to expand the reach.

    Good luck!
