  • How to create content with a different angle [10x method]

Most of you are probably already familiar with Moz’s 10x strategy.

The original 10x content strategy was based on the idea that the Internet is oversaturated with low-quality content, and providing informative, well-written, well-researched, value-adding content to the reader will yield a higher ranking on Google.

This is still true for some industries where the content is very poorly written, but for the most part, everybody’s creating high quality content now, so the game has changed.

I “10x” my content by differently answering the same search intent as my competitors.

    Read that again.

**Differently answering the same search intent.**

I have used this content angle strategy to generate over 1.2m users for my clients in 2022.

Here’s a step-by-step on how you can use it:

    # ?️‍♂️ [STEP 1] Review the pre-existing content in the SERPs ?️‍♂️

Once you’ve selected a topic or keyword, pop that topic into Google and review the current content landscape.

To successfully analyze the pre-existing content on your topic, review all the articles on the first page of your topic, and take notes of their post format, word count, strengths, and weaknesses, and anything else that stands out to you.

For instance, say my topic is “best foods to build muscle”

After entering my topic into Google and reviewing the SERP, I notice that almost every 1st page result is a listicle, the average word count is 2100 words, and a lot articles are not using images.

Now, I can either create a better listicle, or use a different post format altogether for my article. I will look to my notes on each of the articles to decide which to do.

If you don’t study what already exists, you’ll end up creating mediocre content that’s most likely already out there.

    # ? [STEP 2] Use a different post format ?

After you’ve decided which post format to use, think about how you can put a different spin on your topic that still answers your searcher’s query.

For example, instead of “best foods to build muscle”, you can niche down with, “Best foods to build muscle for hardgainers”.

Or you can leverage a case study like “I gained 20 lbs of lean muscle in 2022. Here’s my diet.”

To help you choose the right post format for your article, consider:

**1. The topic:** Consider the nature of your topic and what format will best suit it. For instance, a step-by-step guide on how to repair your Furnace is better than a listicle on furnace repair strategies.

**2. Your audience:** Consider the preferences and habits of your target audience.

**3. The goals of your post:** Consider what you want to achieve with your post. Are you trying to drive raw traffic to your site, generate leads that will call you, increase sign-ups, etc.?

**4. Your resources:** Consider the resources you have available to create your post. For example, if you want to create a skyscraper type guide, do you have the time to do the 30-40 hours of research or pay a designer to add custom visuals to your article?

    # ?[Step 3] Leverage your opponents’ weaknesses against them ?

Once you have determined your angle, review your notes on the actual content of the pre-existing SERP articles, and investigate their common weaknesses.

Leverage those weaknesses to serve your readers with that which the pre-existing content is missing. That can be better images, typography that is easier to scan, better heading hierarchy, etc.

Two areas that have been very blatant weaknesses for most pre-existing content are:

**1. Content quality:** A lot of “long-form” content is poorly written, inaccurate, or out-of-date. This could be an opportunity to create better content on the topic.

**2. Content UI:** Look at the content UI, such as the layout, design, and readability. Is the content easy to understand and navigate? Is it visually appealing? This will make a huge difference in your bounce rate.

    # Extra: Let me roast your content ?
