The Distribution Network, in this case, is an algorithm that uses a wide array of metrics to deliver content to users, which is true for pretty much every social platform. Almost all recommendation algorithms are black boxes, which means we don’t get to know *why* specific content is recommended over other content.
We do, however, get to see what content does well and what doesn’t. The fact that young, attractive women tend to be put to the top of the recommendation list tells us that they are receiving initial engagement that is preferred by the platform for recommendation. Again, without insider knowledge of the recommendation system we don’t know *what* specifically drives that initial engagement, but it is likely a mix of clicks/views/comments from all sources, like followers/subs, and from parts of platforms like instagrams “For You” page. This is likely exacerbated by people and bots that look specifically for content from young, attractive women, either to engage with, or to capture and store.
