Google Ads – How do YOU optimise manual CPC bidding (in 2021)?

Posted by seohelper on December 10, 2020 at 9:40 pm

I have a confession to make:

**I have become dependent on automated bidding strategies.**

It all went downhill after the avg. position metric depreciated. In the past, I’d run a daily script manually bidding every individual keyword up and down based on the historic avg. position. That worked wonders.

Now, I’d like to get back to enhanced manual CPC. To regain control.

So I’m left to wonder how you’re all approaching this?

Do you do it completely manually? What metric do you aim for to know if you’re over/under-bidding? Are any scripts worth recommending?

I’m looking forward to hearing your approaches 🙂

*FYI, I’m not against automatic bidding. Generally, I tend to switch to target-CPA after I’ve hit 50 conversions/month on a campaign. I’m just wondering about the best strategy to hit that mark with manual CPC.*

How I miss average position metric…

When I’m forced to use Manual CPC, I tend to base myself of the search impression share (general, top, absolute top) and on the auction insights. That’s how I know if I’m doing well or not compared to competitors.

But it means that I spend a lot of time on some reports as well: devices, location, audiences… to make sure I’m not over spending in some areas.

You can set up automated rules to adjust keyword bids using “Search top IS” and “Search abs. top IS”.
