GuestApril 25, 2024 at 11:54 amOne thing to remember is just how much better Google was compared to its competitors at the time. It was like being invaded by a civilization centuries ahead in tech. Even people who weren’t tech heads could tell.
I’m sure this guy didn’t help, but I’m not sure any company could have survived the Google revolution unless they totally rethought how they approached search.
And by that time, it was too late.

GuestApril 25, 2024 at 1:03 pmMakes sense, Google’s search as it stands today is completely fucked, because it’s spent the last 20 years with no competition. That’s changed, so why wouldn’t you hire the guy who knows what it’s like to go from having no real competition in the same market to having to compete against something that’s unstoppable, aka AI search.

GuestApril 25, 2024 at 1:26 pmSome good comments in there:
“I don’t even know what Google is showing me any more. First result is always sponsored. I scroll down a bit, and I get these cards that are unrelated to my search?”
“There’s all the FAQ in the results too. I don’t mind them as a user, but if that was my web site content they were showing inline, denying me traffic, I’d be raging.”

GuestApril 25, 2024 at 1:39 pmIt’s not entirely a fair assessment of the guy. He was hired on an already sinking ship. It wasn’t like Yahoo was kicking everyone’s ass until he came along. Google was growing rapidly and gobbling up market share before he ever got to Yahoo.
