Hey there! I’m currently a high school teacher (I’m trying to switch careers), and I’ve been doing some content writing/SEO work on the side for my friend’s company for the last three months. I’m planning on finding a new job at the end of the school year and I wanted to pursue learning SEO so I can do that full time. I come from a humanities background (I majored in English and German), but I wanted to branch out and learn something outside of my wheelhouse. How can I prepare over the next year for a full-time job and what do full-time jobs look like with SEO or is it more of a freelancing type of field? Thank you so much in advance!

Ask yourself, do you want to work for yourself or someone else. Then ask yourself, you like going into an office or do you like working from home? If you want to work for someone else you must work on your resume. If you are looking to freelance/start an agency, you must work on your portfolio. Create a website with samples of your work. SEO your own website.

Create a website and rank it. Nothing is going to be able to teach you as well as that. You also have an edge in knowing how to write, so use it.

I’d say give it 6 months of doing keyword research, content creation, and internal linking, and then move on towards link building. You have a lag period before you see if anything is working. See what’s working and then adjust from there. I spent a year practicing before I moved on and started selling services. I’d say if you work at it every day you can replace your income 100%, but you need to stay determined when it gets tough and you don’t see any progress for months.
