I have a US ecommerce website that runs on .com and an AU website that runs on .com.au

I want to enter markets in EU and Asia, so am considering consolidating all under the .com with a subfolder approach, so redirecting .com.au into .com/au/.

What is the best practice for the US .com domain structure, can I leave the .com alone to cater for my US customers? Or do I need to create a .com/us/

Currently, my URL has the location at the end, so finishes with /United-States (not best practice I know).

Do I proceed with a subfolder approach for all geo’s and swallow any SEO fallout in the hope that long-term, consolidating everything under .com will lead to much better authority and as a result traffic?

Alternatively, do I just leave the .com and .com.au domains alone?

    Thanks,

Setup hreflang tags. Google will be able to serve correct pages to right users.

You can even go down as to setting up multiple languages per country. Look at DHL, UPS and those big logistics companies. I work with one as well.

I live in a country, where English is not the most prominent language. But by having hreflang tags set to support my country + English as a language, Google correctly prioritizes local subdirectory with English set up for me, when I search for their brand.
