  • Does TikTok really have 10x engagement vs Reels or is it just our content?

Posted by jeffvschroeder on April 7, 2023 at 10:36 am

We’ve had quite a bit of success with TikTok just due to the type of content we have. Basically, it’s easily broken down into 30-45 second clips.

We’ve started posting similar content to Instagram and Facebook Reels with the understanding that engagement and views are typically lower on those apps. However, over our last 10-15 posts, it’s been a shockingly consistent 10x difference.

If we get a 20% engagement rate on TikTok, we can expect 2% on those. If we get a 10% rate on TikTok, it will be close to 1% on those.

Is that normal or must we develop a different content strategy for Reels?

Meta is hot trash nowadays. Their algorithm is geared towards you going for paid advertising. They’re trying to compete with TikTok but recently gave up because they’re now lobbying to get TikTok banned in the US.

Also FB demographics are older than TikTok so if you’re content is typically a better fit for younger demographics there will be higher engagement on TikTok than Meta in general.

TikTok’s algorithim is king. I deleted my insta and only cross post to YT. I hate TikTok and how they treat creators but fuck.. that algorithim brings em in.

It has the most organic reach at the moment. Less competition equals more growth and views.

That being said it won’t be true for ever

In my opinion, TikTok’s algorithm is indeed better at promoting content compared to Reels, which might explain the difference in engagement rates. That being said, a 10x difference seems quite significant, and it could also be due to the need for better optimization of your content for Reels.

I personally believe it’s crucial to adapt content to each platform’s unique characteristics and audience preferences. You might want to experiment with different formats, editing styles, or even content topics to see if it resonates better with Reels users. Make sure to keep track of your results to identify what works best for your audience on each platform.

You’ve gotta pay to play on Meta platforms.

TikTok is still possible for organic, but of course will eventually not be.

In the same way, you used to be able to grow an organic following on FB, just from posting. Every newer platform will eventually close out, once the opportunity is no longer there, and they need to monetize more aggressively.
