  • Do you have to be good at content writing in order to be good at SEO?

Posted by seohelper on August 23, 2021 at 11:37 am

Is it a necessity to do alot of content writing to be good in SEO? I know content writing plays a huge part in boosting and ranking but in order to be an expert in that field do you really need those writing skills?

I’m new and currently still learning SEO (self study), the technical parts of SEO are interesting but when it comes to content writing I just don’t have the desire and fire to come out with a content or article.

What makes an SEO expert considered an expert? In terms of specific skill (keyword research, html expert eg)

    Thanks in advance

No not really. but you just need to understand what kind of content works for your audience. Understand the likes of your audience, explain it to your content writer, thats it.!

Learn more about technical SEO, I consider it as little difficult in SEO field.

    Good luck!

You do need to know what is good content otherwise you won’t be able to hire anyone else. I do think that an SEO that has written and ranked their own content will be able to outdo someone who hasn’t. It’s good practice even if you hate it, plus you’ll respect your writers a ton more when you realize how difficult the job is.

Yes. Content is king, tech is trash. Had good tech been able to rank on its own, it would mean increased competition for the search engine companies.

Since there also has to be massive amounts of content and links to rank, potential tech competitors are kept out of the game. Therefore search engines can expand into various tech verticals using low cost solutions, skyrocketing profits.

Hey man, your question is valid. I have been an SEO for 8 years, run an SEO high ticket practice. First year i have been asking myself the same question : how impactfull was pure content strategy ?

A lot of people out there call themselves experts, for me an expert is a person that gets results, ie trafic / conversions. To answer your first question from that point of view, i’d say : it depends.

Writing lots of content ( >~20 publications a month) is not a necessity. I have ranked niche sites with 8 publications a month, that bring enough passive income to be considered a success. The success was good strategy (between : volume content, quality of content, links, technical seo, backlinks, and so on…).

And on another site i had to play volume strategy (meaning 1000 published pages over a few months) to occupy long tail space for example and build up rank to root query. Of course competition profile, keywords volumes where not the same as first case.

Second thing, writing SEO content is not rocket science. You dont need to be Shakespeare, you need to bring value to your visitor by answering their question (more precisely the intent behind the words they formulated in the search engine). Which is not so obvious to get and a subject for which tools even exist…

To answer your second question (btw answers first question too …) you become an SEO expert by PRACTICING SEO. Of course you should learn stuff, learn techniques from more experienced peers, that would save you lots of time. However SEO (like all skills) gets acquired with practice, test, failure, improvement …

I dont know whats you personal situation (student, work, etc…), I would say practice SEO on one or many websites for 2 hours a day. You’d get your own feel about what strategy to apply in the cases you encounter. I dont want to seem spammy, however i have a training program for SEO for webmasters running their sites. PM if you are interested in investing in education.

    Good luck man.

Low-level jobs/contracts, or working solo may require it so if you don’t want to write you may need more skills to get better work. I can write, but I haven’t in decades because I have a team of in-house and external writers so that I can focus on the more important tasks. That said, you *definitely* need a deep understanding of what quality content is and how to best present it to your audience.

You can get away being decent at content writing if you know how to identify information that’s missing on Google. If you can find topics that people search a lot but don’t find results for, you can succeed at SEO.

Also, a lot of top SEO blogs and SaaS companies do not write exquisite content in terms of English language, but they do enough to provide the information people seek.

TL;DR You needn’t be an expert in English language as long as you can lay down content in simple words.

I’d not say so. Understanding what good content is, and the ability to write good piece of content on your own may be helpful, but they’re not mandatory.
In my opinion, is way more important understanding when a piece of content is complete, and what to ask to make it great in terms of textual informations, images, videos, and everything else.
I.E. is way more important to understand when you may need a tool, so you have to go to devs and ask them their help, and when you need pure encyclopedic content, that requires the help of other people. So you must have the ability to read a SERP, and that’s definitely SEO.

UX-if your content answers their query and provides value it’s good enough. You can hire decent writers if it’s not something you enjoy. But write for your reader not Google and you’ll be winning.

Depends on who you ask. The people with moral high grounds or the grey hats.

Without quality content writing, there is no hope of getting good search engine rankings. Quality content writing is the most important part of your SEO. With quality, SEO-friendly formatting is very important because the Google algorithm looks for important words at particular places on your web page or blog post.

No. Just like you can be a good director but a terrible actor. (Someone will take issue with that analogy.)

Just learn what defines ‘good’ content and use one of the many tools out there to help plan and execute!

If your content is not interesting, engaging, then people might not stay on your page too long. Even if the SEO is great, the content is what keeps people on the page and possibly they take an action based on your CTA(s)(Call-To-Actions).

Knowing how to create good content, can be very beneficial.

Apart from the general ‘Content is king’ statement, you don’t necessarily have to be a great content writer to be good at SEO. In the end, SEO is ‘technically’ about ranking your page in the SERP, and doesn’t have much to do with how well the content is drafted. However, you don’t want your customers/audience to visit the page never to return again, do you now? You can be good at SEO by fixing the technical SEO (image optimization, page loading time, web crawlers), creating quality backlinks, or even better yet, buying them, and stuffing just the right density of keywords. This may get your page up in the rankings, but this won’t be enough to retain your audience. You will have to contribute to the value that you are offering, and there’s one way to do that; writing good and engaging content.

The purpose of SEO is to get the web page indexed or ranked on the desired keywords or set of keywords.

For doing that, an SEO has to perform various tasks. writing content is primarily the job of content writer, the job of SEO is to check whether the content is properly optimized for SEO purposes or not.

SEO can be divided into two parts:- On-page SEO and Off-Page SEO. On-Page can be further divided into two parts: – content and technical.

So, to be a good SEO you should know all the things. If you are learning SEO, I must not say that you should be a good content writer but you should be good at judging what should be the best content for your webpage.

You should know about the keyword density, LSI, keyword research, types of heading. They are more important from an SEO point of view.

So, if you are not a good content writer, you can still be a good SEO because you need to optimize the content for Googlebot without hampering the user experience, that’s the job of SEO.

A content writer may write good content but it is not properly optimized for SEO purposes, to make the content SEO friendly, you need to curate it in a way so that the context behind the content remains the same, user experience remains the same but it should also be indexable the Google on the set of desired keywords.

So, the job of the SEO is to make sure that the content is fit for both the users and search engine.

So, content writing is an add on skill instead of a compulsory skill. So, if you are not a good content writer, you can still be a good SEO.
