I have a book review blog where maintaining content length is a major problem. Listicles bring the best results but single reviews are not attracting any traffic.

For reference, a book review usually has approx. 500 – 700 word based on competitor’s data. I don’t think people would like to read a 2000 words long review.

Is it possible to rank deapite of short content?

Yes 500 – 700 words is enough, but I would say not in your case. Unless you are reviewing 30 page books, that’s not enough content and tells me that it’s not providing enough value IMO. 500 words to review a 600 page book simply seems like it’s not enough.

I’ve experimented with different post lengths, but it hasn’t made much difference for book reviews. My traffic for reviews is a trickle. But I think regular posting does help, as well as lots of internal links. You might have a chance of ranking for new books, but you have to get ARC’s to do that.

Amazon, Goodreads and the leading newspapers are always going to dominate. As you say, listicles seem to be the way to go.
