  • Content Creator to Social Media Manager?

Posted by UnicornGoBoom on December 1, 2023 at 6:38 am

Hi! I’m currently a content creator and have 120,000+ followers across platforms with 8 years of experience in photo/short video content creation (not in a professional setting). I’m interested in becoming a freelancing Social Media Manager but have no marketing experience aside from my own content creation and posting schedule. Though I do have experience in management, contract negotiation, and project management. I also have a BS in Business Management.

Is this something that will be unachievable without processional experience?

Will I be able to get clients?

Is there any certifications/requirements I should look into first?

Tips and concerns are appreciated 🙂

You can monetize your 120,000 following using affiliate products and get brand deals. Apart from that learn about one social media platform. For example this followers could be on your Instagram or Tiktok.

Yes you definitely can. I had no experience when I started. I would suggest investing in a course. Coastal Collective is really good. And use your profile as an example.

Simple create an email lis and then monetize it

Go on linked in build your audience there you will get lots of retainer clients there

Moreover, as you said you have a large audience so create a lead magnet it can be a short course, webinar, booklet or etc. then upsell your audience and sell paid course.

You have a product, you have audience, you just need to create a funnel to monetize it

You have all the skills to make the transition. SMM would mainly entail content planning, studying trends and your audience, which I believe you already do on your socials.

You could venture into LinkedIn where you’d be able to get more clients. Your achievements as a content creator would be a good way to prove that you can get the job done.

Hey, corporate SMM here (who also happens to be a hiring manager). I know you mentioned freelance, but you should strongly consider working as a SMM in-house for a business. I’d say there is no need for you to get anymore certifications as you have legit experience and a business degree to back it up. As a hiring manager, I’d personally rank you approaching a mid-manager level if you could properly tell the story of your 8 years of social media experience.

Funny enough, I started out professionally in social kind of the same way — with my pitch to my first gig being “if I could build a huge following with strong engagement for myself, image what I could do for a well-known brand.” If you’re looking for a stable, high paying role… look at going in-house for a brand! 🙂
