  • Clients Posting on Their Own

I run a few social media accounts for small-medium-sized businesses in my area. Lately, we’ve had a problem with clients posting on their own. This, of course, throws off our carefully planned schedule, but we’re not sure how to ask them to stop.

This also causes issues because they’ll read DMs, but won’t reply so we miss them, or reply to comments but not in the tone of the brand. We’ve also had trouble getting them to stop using the branded accounts as their own personal ones (i.e. messaging family and friends about personal matters). It’s so awkward to accidentally read your client’s family drama or medical issues accidentally because they use the account I manage to discuss it.

Tell them to stop, use their personal accounts, or you cannot manage their accounts for them

Something has to give. They either get off of the account entirely or you continue to get shitty results. This is a business. Step up and tell them. Do not sugarcoat anything.

Hide their posts when they do that if that’s possible.

See in the end they gonna do what they want. You can tell them but if they don’t listen to you, then just focus on what you are doing and at the end of your contract, don’t renew it. Or if you are ok with it, then just deal with it. Deleting their post and constantly asking them to do not this or that is a bit annoying.

And surely you aren’t enjoying this either. So just tell them for the last time, and if they still do it. Then just don’t renew the contract again. But as I said, don’t present yourself as the problem. They are doing the mistake, not you.

But if you constantly ask them to not do this or that, then the whole situation will come on to your unprofessional behaviour.

Regarding personal DMs, if they don’t care then you shouldn’t care.
For comments and professional DMs, check them all not just unread or keep time stamps to make sure you do not miss out on important DMs and comments.

I guess, end of the day again if your client doesn’t care about the right branding messaging then you shouldn’t. Keep doing your work and strengthen your portfolio

I’m not in this industry, so maybe I don’t know enough to comment, but if it’s the business’ account, can’t they do what they want with it? I get that it can be annoying to you, the manager of the account, but it’s their account, and unless it’s something you agreed upon in advance, you probably just need to suck it up and deal with it. If I hired a social media manager for one of my accounts, I’d be pretty irritated if they told me I couldn’t post something. That being said, I’d probably go through them to make the post, since that is the point in hiring them to begin with, but I have common sense — some people don’t. lol.

This drives me crazy. I had to get over it. Was told I was paid to do a job and just to do it. I’m no longer a freelancer and work solely for one company so I can’t fire them as a client. And it’s ridiculous money so I just suck it up.
Just keep your end of the bargain. It’s not your concern unless they get to the point that it’s affecting their profit and in turn your income.
