  • ChatGPT for SEO

I’m not a SEO professional, but I sometimes build or upgrade websites for small businesses and try to do my best to make websites that will rank well locally for clients.

Yesterday I was messing around with ChatGPT and while it’s still flawed, I was impressed with the answers it was giving. Midway through the “conversation” I realized it could maybe be used to super quickly write a large amount of site content for certain types of businesses.

I once made a website for a local underground utilities company. If I ask ChatGPT “Can you please write an article about the benefits of winterizing a sprinkler system, it produces:

“Winterizing a sprinkler system has several benefits:

    1. Protects against damage caused by freezing temperatures: Water in the pipes, fittings, and sprinkler heads can freeze and expand during the winter, causing them to crack and break. By winterizing your sprinkler system, you can prevent this damage and save money on costly repairs.

    2. Prevents leaks: Frozen water in the pipes can cause them to burst, resulting in leaks. Winterization helps prevent this by removing the water from the system before it has a chance to freeze.

    3. Reduces the risk of water contamination: If water is left in the pipes over the winter, it can become contaminated with dirt, debris, and other contaminants. This can affect the quality of the water and the overall performance of the irrigation system. Winterization helps prevent contamination by removing the water from the system.

    4. Saves water: Winterizing your sprinkler system ensures that no water is being wasted over the winter months. This can save you money on your water bill and help conserve resources.

Overall, winterizing your sprinkler system helps protect it from damage, reduces the risk of leaks and contamination, and saves water. It is an important maintenance task to ensure that your irrigation system is in good working order when spring arrives.”

I feel like this is good enough to populate a page with a few small edits and maybe a read from someone at the company to ensure it’s accurate. Huge time saver if this method can be used for 10-20 pages.

    It’s junk regurgitated content.
By all means make it live but don’t expect it to rank.
There’s zero value to it, it’s adding nothing to what’s already out there on the web.

I asked the bot for content in several fields I’ve written for, and while its writing style was confident and its essay structure was good, its answers were factually wrong, from minor errors on bicycle wheels to life-threateningly bad cooking advice. It was significantly worse than content from contract writers working outside their typical expertise.

So I would be wary of using it without careful review by subject matter experts – a customer who recognizes even one significant error will lose trust beyond that one article.

On the other hand, it’s fast and free, so far, so you could potentially redirect writer fees to reviewer fees and still come out ahead.

My problem with fellow SEOs at large and ai content is the misperception that it’s quality content. Sure, if you’re trying to rank for, “what’s a good sandwich” or “what color should I paint my house,” it could be useful. But, I work in tech. I’m writing content about the recent okta hack, and PAM in general. So, I don’t see this working very well in spaces like this.

Why not? As long as the info is correct. I don’t have PhD in winterizing sprinkler systems but it sounds legit.

Google says it will penalize AI written content.

First, AI content has been around a while. Chat GTP is just getting a lot of attention because it does a pretty good job at writing code and it went viral for doing so. If you don’t write code and you need some, it’s pretty good for that, but even in a niche that is very easily tested, it’s leaves a lot to be desired.

AI content will need human input because AI only knows what’s it’s learned. As of yet, it can’t tell what’s true and what’s not. Just messing around with Chat GTP last night it told me easily looked up, factually incorrect information. Worse yet, it did it 3 times and each time the wrong part of the information changed. It was like talking to a pathological liar.

Yes, use it as a base then make it better. But know everyone else is doing the same thing now, so plagiarizing is going to be easy to catch. Eventually Google should be able to identify AI writing fairly efficiently.

Do not use it to write content.

Everyone is thinking the same. Meaning content gen via AI is going to be on every search engines radar and content will most likely weigh less. Google has already demonstrated that by lowering the rankings of blog heavy sites.

I’m using it every day for content creation and even stuff like meta descriptions and then editing as needed. It has improved my workflow.

ChatGPT will change the whole ecosystem. If you can operate it and check the facts, then there’s no reason to not use it.

People might tell you that Google will “know”. It won’t.

Learn how to talk to it and generate good content.

    Good luck!

I haven’t tried this much yet but it should be possible to have your grammar corrected. Like grammarly.
